At least five people were killed and nine injured in an explosion near an arms depot in Syria's Idlib province, the area's internal security directorate said on Wednesday.

Security officials said the explosion may have occurred in one of several workshops at the site. The five people killed were described as workers.

People ran from the scene of the explosion at what appeared to be a ground-floor garage. The blast sent a huge plume of smoke rising over the town. Authorities said engineers were working to secure the site and deal with remnants of the explosion.

Victims were still under the rubble and rescue teams were continuing recovery operations, state-run Ekhbariya TV said, quoting an official. The explosion took place in the town of Kafr Takharim.

There have been explosions at around a dozen arms depots in Syria over the past year. The explosions have usually been blamed on poor storage.

It was not clear what exactly had caused the blast.

In July, several people were killed and dozens injured in a huge explosion in an ammunition depot near the town of Maarat Misrin, in Idlib.

Syria is struggling to recover from a nearly 14-year civil war that ended with the removal of former president Bashar Al Assad in December last year.
