Seven people were killed when a helicopter crashed in Qatar's territorial waters due to a technical malfunction, the country's Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Defence Ministry said six bodies had been found and that a search operation for another Qatari officer, Capt Saeed Samekh, was continuing. The Interior Ministry announced later that his body was found.

The Defence Ministry said the helicopter suffered a "technical malfunction" during "routine duty".

The others killed are Capt Mubarak Al Marri, Sgt Fahad Al Khayarin and Corp Mohammed Mohammed – all from the Qatari armed forces – as well as Maj Sinan Tastekin from the Qatar-Turkey joint forces, and Turkish civilians Suleiman Kahraman and Ismail Can.

The Qatari ministries extended their condolences to the families of those killed. The UAE has extended its condolences to the families of the victims and to Qatar and Turkey. The Emirates also expressed solidarity with the two countries.

The Turkish Defence Ministry confirmed that one Turkish soldier and two personnel from Turkish defence company Aselsan were killed in the crash. It said the incident happened due to a technical issue encountered during a training flight.

Qatari authorities would carry out inspections to determine the exact cause of the crash, the Turkish ministry added.

Qatar has been intercepting missiles and drones launched from Iran since February 28, when Israel and the US began a military campaign against Tehran.
