Tried and tested: The new Asia de Cuba x Bodytree Yoga Supper Club

  • Arabic

BodyTree and Asia de Cuba, which is located across from the St Regis Abu Dhabi in the Nation Riviera Beach Club, have teamed up to offer the Yoga Supper Club: an hour of stretching followed by a delicious detox menu meal.

This seems to be an emerging trend to get behind: Gaucho Dubai just began offering healthy yoga and lunch packages (including a nutrition session).

The hour-long class is offered by expert yogi Sara Lane (catch her at BodyTree and also at Saturday’s free class, 4-5pm alongside the Ripe Market). Although I arrive a bit restless and distracted, by the end I feel mellow and relaxed.

The detox set menu is downright delicious. My favourite part is the steamed wild salmon, served in a delicate sauce of ginger, garlic, mirin, lemograss, tomato and cilantro and paired with steamed Korean brown rice that is jazzed up with sauteed kale, scallions, white asparagus and grilled avocado.

Starters are mini versions of the restaurant’s beet pica tartare, served in a small crispy wonton with Spanish olives, toasted almonds and avocado ceviche. I am very fond of the seaweed roll, which is served “escabeche” (which is the Spanish word for pickled) and included wakame, edamame and suitably spicy aji panca kimchi enclosed in chinese cabbage.

• The Asia de Cuba x Bodytree Yoga Supper Club is offered every Monday from 6.15pm for Dh180. A mixed, all levels Hatha flow class on the grass by the beach is followed by the detox menu. Mats are provided; prior registration through info@bodytreestudio.com or by calling 02 443 4448 is required.

Closing the loophole on sugary drinks

As The National reported last year, non-fizzy sugared drinks were not covered when the original tax was introduced in 2017. Sports drinks sold in supermarkets were found to contain, on average, 20 grams of sugar per 500ml bottle.

The non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.

Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.

Flavoured water, long-life fruit juice concentrates, pre-packaged sweetened coffee drinks fall under the ‘sweetened drink’ category

Not taxed:

Freshly squeezed fruit juices, ground coffee beans, tea leaves and pre-prepared flavoured milkshakes do not come under the ‘sweetened drink’ band.

UAE currency: the story behind the money in your pockets
Quick pearls of wisdom

Focus on gratitude: And do so deeply, he says. “Think of one to three things a day that you’re grateful for. It needs to be specific, too, don’t just say ‘air.’ Really think about it. If you’re grateful for, say, what your parents have done for you, that will motivate you to do more for the world.”

Know how to fight: Shetty married his wife, Radhi, three years ago (he met her in a meditation class before he went off and became a monk). He says they’ve had to learn to respect each other’s “fighting styles” – he’s a talk it-out-immediately person, while she needs space to think. “When you’re having an argument, remember, it’s not you against each other. It’s both of you against the problem. When you win, they lose. If you’re on a team you have to win together.”

Tips from the expert

Dobromir Radichkov, chief data officer at dubizzle and Bayut, offers a few tips for UAE residents looking to earn some cash from pre-loved items.

  1. Sellers should focus on providing high-quality used goods at attractive prices to buyers.
  2. It’s important to use clear and appealing photos, with catchy titles and detailed descriptions to capture the attention of prospective buyers.
  3. Try to advertise a realistic price to attract buyers looking for good deals, especially in the current environment where consumers are significantly more price-sensitive.
  4. Be creative and look around your home for valuable items that you no longer need but might be useful to others.
