A new basketball store targeting Filipinos in the UAE has opened in Satwa, Dubai. Basketbolista, which means basketball player in Tagalog, stocks the latest footwear, gear and accessories from brands including Nike, Jordan, Under Armour and Adidas.
Mohammed A Baker, deputy chairman of Gulf Marketing Group, which opened the store, said the company was looking forward to playing a part in fostering the Filipino community’s passion for basketball. Its launch on Friday night involved a three-on-three basketball competition with 32 teams competing.
The 120-square-foot store is located on Mankhool Road and is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Call 04 344 8704.

The flights
There are direct flights from Dubai to Sofia with FlyDubai (www.flydubai.com) and Wizz Air (www.wizzair.com), from Dh1,164 and Dh822 return including taxes, respectively.
The trip
Plovdiv is 150km from Sofia, with an hourly bus service taking around 2 hours and costing $16 (Dh58). The Rhodopes can be reached from Sofia in between 2-4hours.
The trip was organised by Bulguides (www.bulguides.com), which organises guided trips throughout Bulgaria. Guiding, accommodation, food and transfers from Plovdiv to the mountains and back costs around 170 USD for a four-day, three-night trip.
Water waste
In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.
Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.
A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.
The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
