Winter sun with kids

I enjoyed the piece by Amar Grover last week on taking his family on holiday to Oman ("Treading through time," September 26). However, I would like to take a beachside activity-based holiday somewhere that the whole family can relax and where childcare is available. Can you suggest somewhere suitable in the region? We have a toddler and young baby. Egypt is a good bet for a winter beach holiday as temperatures tend to stay around 25 degrees. It's also generally a very family-friendly destination and many big hotels in the Red Sea resorts of Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Taba and Hurghada offer kids' clubs. It can, however, be difficult to find hotels which offer a crèche for babies younger than six months. One company that does is Mark Warner (www.markwarner.co.uk; 0044 871 703 3887), which offers pre-bookable half-day and full-day childcare for children from four months to 17 years in its summer resorts and from four months to 12 years in its winter resorts.

Mark Warner's main resort on the Red Sea is the Intercontintal Abu Soma which is near Hurghada (www.ichotelsgroup.com; 0020 65 326 0700). Mark Warner's website details the range of activities on offer here: these include windsurfing, sailing, kitesurfing, scuba diving and waterskiing ? tennis coaching is also available. Mark Warner has a fully-equipped childcare centre with English-speaking nannies and activity programmes for children. The hotel's own childcare centre only caters for children aged from four to 12 and also offers babysitting facilities.

Another company you could look at is Club Med (www.clubmed.co.uk; 0044 424 4044), which has several properties in Tunisia and Morocco offering supervision for small children including Baby Club Med for babies from four to 23 months and Petit Club Med for children from two to three. Club Med's Moroccan hotels are in Agadir and Marrakech; in Tunisia they are in Hammamet, Nabeul and Djerba. Club Med Villages are devoted to sports ? so for the best in both childcare and sports, Agadir in Morocco or Nabeul in Tunisia would be worth researching ? for the smoothest holiday possible, you can book a package that includes everything.

SUNDERLAND 2002-03

No one has ended a Premier League season quite like Sunderland. They lost each of their final 15 games, taking no points after January. They ended up with 19 in total, sacking managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson and losing 3-1 to Charlton when they scored three own goals in eight minutes.

SUNDERLAND 2005-06

Until Derby came along, Sunderland’s total of 15 points was the Premier League’s record low. They made it until May and their final home game before winning at the Stadium of Light while they lost a joint record 29 of their 38 league games.

HUDDERSFIELD 2018-19

Joined Derby as the only team to be relegated in March. No striker scored until January, while only two players got more assists than goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The mid-season appointment Jan Siewert was to end his time as Huddersfield manager with a 5.3 per cent win rate.

ASTON VILLA 2015-16

Perhaps the most inexplicably bad season, considering they signed Idrissa Gueye and Adama Traore and still only got 17 points. Villa won their first league game, but none of the next 19. They ended an abominable campaign by taking one point from the last 39 available.

FULHAM 2018-19

Terrible in different ways. Fulham’s total of 26 points is not among the lowest ever but they contrived to get relegated after spending over £100 million (Dh457m) in the transfer market. Much of it went on defenders but they only kept two clean sheets in their first 33 games.

LA LIGA: Sporting Gijon, 13 points in 1997-98.

BUNDESLIGA: Tasmania Berlin, 10 points in 1965-66

WHAT IS THE LICENSING PROCESS FOR VARA?

Vara will cater to three categories of companies in Dubai (except the DIFC):

Category A: Minimum viable product (MVP) applicants that are currently in the process of securing an MVP licence: This is a three-stage process starting with [1] a provisional permit, graduating to [2] preparatory licence and concluding with [3] operational licence. Applicants that are already in the MVP process will be advised by Vara to either continue within the MVP framework or be transitioned to the full market product licensing process.

Category B: Existing legacy virtual asset service providers prior to February 7, 2023, which are required to come under Vara supervision. All operating service proviers in Dubai (excluding the DIFC) fall under Vara’s supervision.

Category C: New applicants seeking a Vara licence or existing applicants adding new activities. All applicants that do not fall under Category A or B can begin the application process through their current or prospective commercial licensor — the DET or Free Zone Authority — or directly through Vara in the instance that they have yet to determine the commercial operating zone in Dubai.

How will Gen Alpha invest?

Mark Chahwan, co-founder and chief executive of robo-advisory firm Sarwa, forecasts that Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing in their teenage years and therefore benefit from compound interest.

“Technology and education should be the main drivers to make this happen, whether it’s investing in a few clicks or their schools/parents stepping up their personal finance education skills,” he adds.

Mr Chahwan says younger generations have a higher capacity to take on risk, but for some their appetite can be more cautious because they are investing for the first time. “Schools still do not teach personal finance and stock market investing, so a lot of the learning journey can feel daunting and intimidating,” he says.

He advises millennials to not always start with an aggressive portfolio even if they can afford to take risks. “We always advise to work your way up to your risk capacity, that way you experience volatility and get used to it. Given the higher risk capacity for the younger generations, stocks are a favourite,” says Mr Chahwan.

Highlighting the role technology has played in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he says: “They were often excluded, but with lower account minimums ... a customer with $1,000 [Dh3,672] in their account has their money working for them just as hard as the portfolio of a high get-worth individual.”

FIVE TRENDS THAT WILL SHAPE UAE BANKING

• The digitisation of financial services will continue

• Managing and using data effectively will become a competitive advantage

• Digitisation will require continued adjustment of operating models

• Banks will expand their role in the customer life through ecosystems

• The structure of the sector will change
