The first booking platform for microstays, where hotels can be booked on an hourly basis, has launched in the UAE. ByHours, a Spanish company founded in 2012, currently offers more than 2,500 hotels in Europe, MENA and the Americas that can be booked in "packs" of three, six or 12 hours, depending on need. Big brands such as Accor, Melia, Holiday Inn, Hyatt and IHG have all signed up in various locations.
The service helps hotels sell unbooked rooms for at least part of the time they are empty, and affords travellers the opportunity to save on the normal full room rate. It is useful for those working long hours in one city but living in another, or those on short stopovers who want access to a hotel room to briefly rest and refresh.
The app, available to download in the Apple App Store and on Google Play, and also works as a normal website, requires a credit card and reflects a current trend in the travel industry for tailored pricing, which extends to services such as hotel rooms, car and bike hire. While day rates have been available at most UAE hotels for some time, this is the first time shorter stays have been sold. However, so far in the UAE at least, the Byhours prices are not proportionately lower, meaning that a room booked for half of the normal 20-hour period (checking in at 4pm and out at midday) is still more than half the cost.
Currently, Byhours offers 65 hotels in Dubai, 5 in Abu Dhabi, and one each in Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah. A six-hour stay at the Corniche Hotel in Abu Dhabi on April 10th comes in at Dh190 including taxes, a saving on the normal room rate of Dh270. At the Eureka Hotel in Deira, Dubai, a 3-hour stay is priced at Dh73. The full overnight rate starts at Dh135 including taxes.
In cities where more hotels are offering the service and rates are generally higher, bigger bargains are to be had. The Bloc Gatwick Hotel at London's Gatwick Airport, which usually costs around Dh400 a night, is offering a six-hour stay for Dh253, a good saving if you are only there for six hours anyway.
“ByHours.com came about from my own experience as a user," said Christian Rodriguez, one of the app's founders. "Most hotel chains are willing to adapt to the necessities of their guests in terms of needs, tastes and lifestyle, but they were inflexible with regards to the hours where you can check in and check out; especially when your flight is first thing in the morning. ByHours.com solves that problem.”

Gertrude Bell's life in focus
A feature film
At one point, two feature films were in the works, but only German director Werner Herzog’s project starring Nicole Kidman would be made. While there were high hopes he would do a worthy job of directing the biopic, when Queen of the Desert arrived in 2015 it was a disappointment. Critics panned the film, in which Herzog largely glossed over Bell’s political work in favour of her ill-fated romances.
A documentary
A project that did do justice to Bell arrived the next year: Sabine Krayenbuhl and Zeva Oelbaum’s Letters from Baghdad: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Gertrude Bell. Drawing on more than 1,000 pieces of archival footage, 1,700 documents and 1,600 letters, the filmmakers painstakingly pieced together a compelling narrative that managed to convey both the depth of Bell’s experience and her tortured love life.
Books, letters and archives
Two biographies have been written about Bell, and both are worth reading: Georgina Howell’s 2006 book Queen of the Desert and Janet Wallach’s 1996 effort Desert Queen. Bell published several books documenting her travels and there are also several volumes of her letters, although they are hard to find in print. Original documents are housed at the Gertrude Bell Archive at the University of Newcastle, which has an online catalogue.
