Pérez Art Museum lifts Miami’s cultural side
The opening of the Herzog & de Meuron-designed Pérez Art Museum in Miami (www.pamm.org) this week has further underlined the US city's reputation for being at the cutting edge of modern art.
The museum is dedicated to showcasing art of the 20th and 21st centuries and is situated in Museum Park, close to the sea.
“Our cultural infrastructure has evolved,” says Thom Collins, the museum director. “We know people come here because they want the tropical environment. We needed to give them something that addresses our main competition: the beach.”
Miami's hotel scene is also developing apace. The Hotel Victor South Beach (www.hotelvictorsouthbeach.com) has just reopened after a multimillion dollar refurbishment. The hotel occupies a 1937 building on Ocean Drive. Rooms cost from US$350 (Dh1,286) per night.
Qatar Airways (www.qatarairways.com) will launch non-stop flights from Doha to Miami next year.
Doha’s new five-star boutique hotel
Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels has opened the sixth of seven planned properties in the Qatari capital Doha. The Al Bidda hotel features 19 rooms and 13 suites, Arabesque chandeliers and tiling, and fixed walls of woven straw, fused with modern technology and contemporary designs.
The other hotels belonging to the group are Al Najada, Al Mirqab, Arumaila, Musheireb, Al Jasra and Al Jomrok.
Rooms at Al Bidda start from 800 Qatari rials (Dh807) per night including breakfast, taxes and Wi-Fi (www.swbh.com).
Women-only trip to Hong Kong and Macau
The Dubai-based women’s travel group The World at Her Feet has places available on a four-night, five-day trip to Hong Kong and Macau taking place from January 20 to 24. The trip costs Dh5,000 per person, on a twin-sharing basis, including flights and accommodation.
In Hong Kong, the group will see the city’s world-class hotels and resorts, expansive tourism and entertainment facilities, luxurious shopping malls and state-of-the-art convention and exhibition venues.
“Macau also offers mouth-watering cuisine, glittering nights and historic temples,” says the trip description.
The group will also visit Lantau Island for a view of one of the world’s tallest bronze Buddha statues.
The group size is between 15 and 25. The company claims that participants save between 30 and 40 per cent compared to the cost of travelling alone.
“Mothers and daughters, sisters, friends and co-workers sometimes join us as a pair,” says the company. “Many women travel alone because their spouses/companions don’t like to or don’t have time for travel.”
