A bit of an uproar has been directed towards
Yahoo! Maktoob
over the past week after our friends at
ArabCrunch reported
that the online portal was shutting down 27 of its websites next month.
"Yesterday Yahoo Maktoob users received an email from Yahoo telling them that around 27 sites from Maktoob will be closed," wrote Gaith Saqar.
"These sites include forums and sites that Maktoob have perviously acquired and paid a large sum of money while others are sites that Maktoob it self has developed and launched in house before Yahoo's acquisitions."

, the vice president and managing director at Yahoo! Middle East, on the phone fresh off a plane in in Paris following the Arab Entrepreneur Summit in Washington DC. Here what Mr Nassef had to say after the jump.
Mr Nassef explained that the closure of the Maktoob said is "part of a
regular review that actually was ongoing before the acquisition [of
Maktoob by Yahoo]."
"It's something that we always try to optimise the user experience that we have," he said.
"We acquired a bunch of sites before and it's not as much of ending but
wanting to consolidate a lot of the traffic that's going on and user
experience. It makes more sense for our users who are visiting.
"We're not really losing people because users are still going to go [to
these sites], it's just going to be a clear path how to get to these
places. Maktoob over time, it grew so quickly and we've add so many
different sites and we didn't spend so much time on consolidation of
these things. We didn't have the resources and it is a matter of
prioritisation, but now we do."
I asked Mr Nassef whether he felt that this would effectively cut the
amount of Arabic content online after championing the increase of more
regional content, a notable question one ArabCrunch commenter posed.
"It's all about focussing where to go to get content," Mr Nassef said.
"Yahoo used to have multiple areas to enter into the site. Now it has a
very clear front page and it's easy to find the information you're
looking for ... For Maktoob, because of the acquisitions we've done,
we've had hundreds of different areas where people could get sports
contnet or Islamic content. It didn't make sense. It's not at all about
shutting down the content. It's still going to be there but it will
just be in a different spot."

Brunch has been around, is some form or another, for more than a century. The word was first mentioned in print in an 1895 edition of Hunter’s Weekly, after making the rounds among university students in Britain. The article, entitled Brunch: A Plea, argued the case for a later, more sociable weekend meal. “By eliminating the need to get up early on Sunday, brunch would make life brighter for Saturday night carousers. It would promote human happiness in other ways as well,” the piece read. “It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.” More than 100 years later, author Guy Beringer’s words still ring true, especially in the UAE, where brunches are often used to mark special, sociable occasions.
Find the right policy for you
Don’t wait until the week you fly to sign up for insurance – get it when you book your trip. Insurance covers you for cancellation and anything else that can go wrong before you leave.
Some insurers, such as World Nomads, allow you to book once you are travelling – but, as Mr Mohammed found out, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered.
Check your credit card before booking insurance to see if you have any travel insurance as a benefit – most UAE banks, such as Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, have cards that throw in insurance as part of their package. But read the fine print – they may only cover emergencies while you’re travelling, not cancellation before a trip.
Pre-existing medical conditions such as a heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy and even asthma may not be included as standard. Again, check the terms, exclusions and limitations of any insurance carefully.
If you want trip cancellation or curtailment, baggage loss or delay covered, you may need a higher-grade plan, says Ambareen Musa of Souqalmal.com. Decide how much coverage you need for emergency medical expenses or personal liability. Premium insurance packages give up to $1 million (Dh3.7m) in each category, Ms Musa adds.
Don’t wait for days to call your insurer if you need to make a claim. You may be required to notify them within 72 hours. Gather together all receipts, emails and reports to prove that you paid for something, that you didn’t use it and that you did not get reimbursed.
Finally, consider optional extras you may need, says Sarah Pickford of Travel Counsellors, such as a winter sports holiday. Also ensure all individuals can travel independently on that cover, she adds. And remember: “Cheap isn’t necessarily best.”

ETFs explained
Exhchange traded funds are bought and sold like shares, but operate as index-tracking funds, passively following their chosen indices, such as the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and the FTSE All World, plus a vast range of smaller exchanges and commodities, such as gold, silver, copper sugar, coffee and oil.
ETFs have zero upfront fees and annual charges as low as 0.07 per cent a year, which means you get to keep more of your returns, as actively managed funds can charge as much as 1.5 per cent a year.
There are thousands to choose from, with the five biggest providers BlackRock’s iShares range, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisors SPDR ETFs, Deutsche Bank AWM X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.
Labour dispute
The insured employee may still file an ILOE claim even if a labour dispute is ongoing post termination, but the insurer may suspend or reject payment, until the courts resolve the dispute, especially if the reason for termination is contested. The outcome of the labour court proceedings can directly affect eligibility.
