Top 5: Motoring's favourite roads for riding a motorbike

From Norway to New Zealand, these are the roads that will make the miles fly by with good asphalt surrounded by natural beauty and history.

Bergen, Norway.

1. Patagonia: Chile to Argentina

Lying below 37 degrees south, Patagonia consists of both Chile and Argentina and has an alpine feel to it. Beginning the two- to three-week journey in Temuco, Chile, you head southeast through the Andes, taking in villages and huge lakes, that sit alongside snow-capped volcanoes. You then pass through Bariloche, before heading through rolling hills to Esquel, Chile Chico and down to El Calafate, where the Perito Moreno Glacier is. You stop at Rio Gallegos before stopping at Ushuaia - the end of the world.

2. Stavanger to Andalsnes, Norway

Head north through the country's fjordlands, a rugged, mountainous landscape with rollercoaster-like roads. Passing through Sand and Odda, you arrive in the city of Bergen, with cobbled streets and bustling bars. North again, you get a ferry onto Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the world, before passing waterfalls and a glacier en-route to the town of Styrn. From here you hit the Golden route, a beautiful stretch that finishes at Andalsnes.

3. Nürburgring, Germany

This racing circuit is set among the beautiful Eifel Mountains, but the Rhineland as a whole is too nice not to explore. Start at Schweigen, on the French border, and travel north following the German Wine Route through medieval castles and fortresses to Bochenheim. From here, stop overnight at Boppard, a pretty little town on the Rhine River, before completing the remaining 46km to Nürburgring, where you can let your bike loose on one of the most scenic circuits in the world.

4. South Island, New Zealand

Starting in Christchurch, journey south past lakes Tekapo and Pukaki in the mountainous centre of the island before hitting the coast at the city of Dunedin, with its rich Scottish history and steepest street in the world. Next, travel south to Invercargill, then up to the party centre of Queenstown. A trip to the stunning fjord of Milford Sound is a must before heading north via glaciers to the tranquil Lake Kaniere. A ride over Arthur's Pass takes you back to Christchurch.

5. Hatta to Kalba, UAE

So you're too busy to head overseas for a motorbike adventure, but there's plenty to do right here in the UAE. Starting off in Hatta - a two-hour ride from Dubai, near the Oman border - you will arrive in a stunning, mountainous region with perfectly laid roads and hairpin turns to enjoy. Riding northeast will take you through the mountains and onto desert scenery before arriving in Kalba, a nice town on the eastern shore of the Emirates.
