See Ferrari's new Monza, which has no roof and one or two seats – in pictures

Ferrari has been on a fine run of new models in the past 18 months – the 488 Pista and its Spider variant, the Portofino and 812 Superfast – but its latest car, the Monza, is the most striking of the lot.

There are two variants of the roofless car, which is named after the racetrack that is currently home to Formula One's Italian Grand Prix: the SP1 and the SP2. What do those numbers mean? Simple: that is how many seats you get. Yes, there is a one-seater.

It has been billed as the closest thing to a Formula One racer to ever go on sale to the public, and so it follows that it is a limited edition, with less than 500 examples of the 12-cylinder, 810hp machines expected to be made.

More than a few commentators have drawn comparisons with the similarly roofless Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss, a limited edition of 75 that turned heads when it was launched in 2009.

The Monza, however, will leave that marvellous-looking Merc in the dust, with a 0-to-100kph time of less than three seconds (versus about 3.5 seconds for the Sterling Moss).

In Ferrari's usual "if you have to ask..." manner, prices for the Monza were not revealed, but are predicted to be in excess of US$1 million (Dh3.7m).
