Ford Trucks celebrates centenary with 200-vehicle convoy in Sharjah – in pictures

An impressive convoy of more than 200 off-road vehicles took to the streets and sands of Sharjah this week to celebrate 100 years of Ford Trucks.

The drive followed a route from Al Tayer Motors in Sharjah into the dunes of Al Badayer Desert.

Ford's first truck, the TT, was based on the iconic Model T and first went on the market in 1917, when it cost US$600. It went on to a peak production of more than 300,000 units in 1925 before being discontinued after 1927.

In the year of its production spike, a hand-operated windscreen wiper was added to the TT, while the recommended maximum speed was a leisurely 35kph.

The American automaker's truck range has come a long way since then, and currently includes the likes of the F-150, incorporating its high-performance Raptor variant, and the Super Duty. The Ford F-150 has its own long history – the F-Series was first manufactured in 1948, meaning it will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year.

Water waste

In the UAE’s arid climate, small shrubs, bushes and flower beds usually require about six litres of water per square metre, daily. That increases to 12 litres per square metre a day for small trees, and 300 litres for palm trees.

Horticulturists suggest the best time for watering is before 8am or after 6pm, when water won't be dried up by the sun.

A global report published by the Water Resources Institute in August, ranked the UAE 10th out of 164 nations where water supplies are most stretched.

The Emirates is the world’s third largest per capita water consumer after the US and Canada.
