Wish List: Boat Wood recommissions old ships for a new life

These rich and weather-beaten furnishings are made from timber taken from old shipping vessels.

Boat Wood is an environmentally friendly collection of furniture made entirely out of recycled ship wood. Solid slabs of timber taken from old fishing boats in South China have been reshaped into a collection of tables, benches, chairs and bookcases. The wood is dark, rich and weather-beaten, and no two pieces are exactly the same. Each is dotted with imperfections that speak of its age and add to its charm. The collection is simple and sturdy, with robust lines that are befitting of its humble beginnings.

Adding to the overall sense of history, each piece of furniture can be traced back to the boat that it was made from. A plaque declaring the year in which the boat was registered and where it sailed in its former life is attached to each product. If transparency and traceability are the cornerstones of sustainable design, then the Boat Wood collection is as green as they come.
