Ramadan Treats: Lamb Chops

Lamb Chops are deceptively difficult to make.

The premium meat cut requires a watchful chef as any trace of overcooking and it becomes unappetisingly dry.

Hence, if you are a lamb chop fan, the only feasible place to have it outside of home during Ramadan is in the suhour tents where they are served À la carte.

One of the best lamb chops going around is the one served at the Downtown Ramadan Tent, located at the foot of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. The rosemary encrusted chops, with a price of Dh150, were a delight as it came medium rare; the tender meat effortlessly falling away with easy knife strokes. The rosemary was fresh and aromatic while the garlic was present but pleasantly subdued.

The dish was rounded off with crispy fries and fresh greens; it was simple but deliciously effective.

Not all the action occurred on the plate however, make sure to take a nice stroll along the tent and check out the evocative selection of Islamic inspired art from the London based gallery Ahlan Art.

The pieces include illustrations of mosques and other spiritual motifs done on various mediums including acrylic, calligraphy, watercolour, mixed media and photography from artist ranging from Australia, India, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria and England.

Managing director of organisers Emaar Properties, Ahmad Al Matrooshi, explained the Downtown Tent aims to be a culinary and visual feast.

“This year Downtown features an unparalleled collaboration of Islamic art and Arabian hospitality, ensuring a truly differential experience for visitors, that highlights the spirit of the Holy Month of Ramadan,” he said.

“Whether visitors choose to dine under the magnificently-lit tent ceiling or in one of two glorious gardens, enclosed in a glass facade that provide a truly starry evening, Downtown is a must-visit Ramadan venue for get-togethers with family and friends.”

Downtown Ramadan Tent is open from 6pm until 2am from Sunday to Wednesday and until 3am from Wednesday to Saturday. For bookings call 04 4238883 or email downtown@emaar.ae

UK's plans to cut net migration

Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.

Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.

But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.

Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.

Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.

The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
