The Rib Room at Jumeirah Emirates Towers goes American from this Friday April 1, throughout April and May, as part of Jumeirah’s culinary celebration of America.
As part of the celebrations, Friday nights will be reinvented as rib nights, with a rack of ribs and sides paired with American corn beverage for just AED250 per person.
We were treated to an exclusive preview, and our advice to those with a love of ribs would be: Be hungry, be very hungry. The huge racked that arrived at our table didn’t say so much ‘rack’ as ‘cow.’ As head chef Ewart Wardhaugh pointed out though, “if you’re going to go American, you’d may as well include the portions.”
The current theme may be American, but the venue itself is as far from a down-at-heel diner as you could wish. The restaurant itself is all ambient lighting, polished wood, and plush leather seats, while a pianist in the corner takes the place of a Happy Days-style jukebox. A cosy adjacent bar allows you to relax while waiting for your table, or extend the evening if you're unable to move far following the meatiest in the restaurant.
We started with an appetiser of nachos and guacamole — with the guacamole hand made at your table in a traditional pestle and mortar, and available as spicy as you want it due to its bespoke nature, alongside some delicious pretzel-style bread. This was going down nicely, though when the lavish feast of the main deal arrived we realised we could easily have foregone any thoughts of needing starters.
The aforementioned platter of ribs took up a good proportion of our sizeable table, and came with a tasty bowl of mac and cheese, BBQ corn on the cob, and a slice of watermelon, ideal for cleansing the pallette after all the sticky, ribby goodness.
The ribs came in a delicious BBQ sauce, tangy and sweet, but with a slight spicey kick too, and although ribs can be a challenge to eat without most of them ending up down your front, the meat here was so soft and tender I found it would just fall off the bone with a knife and fork, avoiding any need for a change of shirt before dessert.
Talking of dessert, the venue has gone on an American theme here too, and the sweet-toothed will be in heaven. We managed to share a Rocky Road Root Beer Pot de Creme, in the interests of professional research and the mix of milk chocolate, marshmallow, nuts and ice cream was a perfect end to a very filling evening.
Other double-barrelled treats on offer included Sticky Toffee Jelly Doughnuts and Apple Pie Creme Brulee, as just one dessert evidently isn’t enough for this month’s culinary theme!
Definitely one to try — if this is a success, and I see no reason why it won’t be, don’t be surprised to see the offer extended.
