Crumble, a new cafe, now open in downtown Dubai

Crumble, a new urban cafe and bistro, is now open in downtown Dubai. The home-grown concept focuses on fresh, healthy food — including 100 per cent organic, fair-trade speciality coffee — in a relaxed setting. While soups, sandwiches and salads are a mainstay of the menu, there are also heartier mains for guests who want a little more. On the menu: the super bowl salad with red quinoa, kale, pomegranate, walnuts, dates and jalapeño vinaigrette; grilled baby chicken with sweet potato mash and grilled vegetables; prawn tacos with mango salsa, avocado and sour cream; and fresh cod served with a ragout of chickpeas, white kidney beans and cauliflower. Bigger bites include the Wagyu burger; braised lamb shank; and pulled beef sandwich. During breakfast, the cafe offers signature items such as coconut quinoa porridge and skillet-baked eggs.

The two-level cafe also boasts a fenced children’s play area upstairs with plenty of toys to keep little ones entertained. Crumble’s managing director Moustafa Moustafa says: “I really wanted to create a neighbourhood cafe where people can eat many times a week, whether it’s for a business meeting, breakfast, or a catch up with friends. Our healthy food options and relaxed atmosphere make it the perfect getaway from the busy city life.”

Crumble is on Sheikh Zayed Road next to the Sofitel Dubai Downtown Hotel. It is open daily from 7:30am to 10pm. For more information, call 04 448 9061 or visit www.facebook.com/crumble.uae

Some of Darwish's last words

"They see their tomorrows slipping out of their reach. And though it seems to them that everything outside this reality is heaven, yet they do not want to go to that heaven. They stay, because they are afflicted with hope." - Mahmoud Darwish, to attendees of the Palestine Festival of Literature, 2008

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
