The vivid imagination of Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, has arrived at The Dubai Mall in a whole new guise: childrenswear.
The new store is designed in Michele's new signature style, while another, for adults, is also penned for the mall's new Fashion Avenue extension.
Opening today, the new space is a cornucopia of childish wonder. The floor is pistachio green, while the walls are a mix of candy stripes in blue and a jaunty yellow gingham.
Clothes hang in mismatched cabinets and cupboards around the walls, while smaller items like bow ties and T-shirts sit in suitcases set on animal legs, which look like they are ready to canter off any moment. There are iPads set into tabletops, and even the changing rooms, with their swagged curtains, look like something out of a Punch & Judy show.
As expected from Gucci, the clothes are bright and intoxicating, a heady blend of practical cuts in unexpected tones, emblazoned with happy images. For boys there is a trench coat sporting a Chinese dragon on its back, or a biker jacket with Monster spelled out in large letters.
Girls have dresses with sequined tiger faces, gold trainers and bags in the shape of smiling owls. In short, it is the stuff of make believe, of playtime and fantasy, because, given the chance, who wouldn’t want to dress everyday as if they live in a land of dreams.
