American author Amani Al Khatahtbeh founded news and social commentary site MuslimGirl in 2009 when she was 17 because she "was fed up with the misleading misconceptions surrounding Islam".
And this week she's decided to turn down an award from beauty brand Revlon after it announced Wonder Woman star and Israeli actress Gal Gadot as its brand ambassador last week.
"We can't accept role models that support the oppression of women and girls in other parts of the world," Al Khatahtbeh said.
Gadot, 33, performed two years of compulsory service in the Israel Defence Force in the mid-2000s, and she posed for a Maxim magazine spread in 2007 called The Chosen Ones: Israeli Defence Forces. In 2014, she posted a photo to social media with the hashtage #loveidf.
"I can't, in good conscience, accept this award from the brand and celebrate Gal's ambassadorship after the IDF imprisoned a 16-year-old girl named Ahed Tamimi last month," Al Khatahtbeh explained in an Instagram post from January 16.
"From the bottom of my heart, I feel I would not embody the meaning of the Changemaker Award if I were to accept it in these circumstances."
