It's well-known that tennis champion Serena Williams is one of Meghan Markle's closest friends. So when she started talking about a pregnant friend during a television interview, it wasn't a giant leap for fans to assume she was referring to the Duchess of Sussex.
By the end of the interview, Williams had let slip that this mystery friend is expecting a girl.
Mother-of-one Williams was speaking to E! News, when they got on to the subject of a "friend" who is expecting their first child, and the expectations she has as a new mother.
"My friend is pregnant, and she was like, 'My kid’s gonna do this'," said Williams. "I just looked at her like, 'No, she’s not.'"
"Accept mistakes," she added, when asked about advice for new mothers. "I had all of those high expectations ... this is a time where everything is not going to go as planned, and my whole life is planned."
Williams is mother to one-year-old Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, with her husband Alexis Ohanian.
When she was quizzed about how she thinks Markle will fare as a mother, she said: "She'll be the best mum, for sure."
The duke and duchess are expecting their first child later this month, and have not yet publicly revealed if they are expecting a boy or a girl.
Williams and Markle have been friends since 2014, when they met at DirectTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl.
"We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good, old-fashioned girly stuff," Markle wrote on her now-closed lifestyle blog, The Tig. "So began our friendship."
In a later post, she added: "[Williams] quickly became a confidante I would text when I was travelling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down-to-earth chick I was able to grab lunch with just a couple weeks ago in Toronto."
Along with her husband, Williams was one of the many celebrity attendees at Markle's May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, and she regularly champions her royal friend on Instagram.
When the duchess's cookbook came out in September last year, the tennis ace posed a copy on Instagram with a touching caption: "I used to call you Meghan (and I still do) but dear Duchess of Sussex your first project Together a cookbook bringing women of all cultures together. I could not be more excited about it and proud of you.
"It’s beautiful - diversity, inclusivity, coming together in grief or joy - there is just so much love."
