SHARJAH // A world powerboat championship and a chess grand prix are the main events of this year’s Sharjah Water Festival.

The eighth edition of the family entertainment and sporting event will be held from next Wednesday December 20 at Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon.

The UIM Formula One H20 World Powerboat Championship and the Sharjah Grand Prix are expected to draw thousands of people from across the country and the region, offering visitors of all ages, especially children, lots of fun and a selection of world-class events.

The powerboat competition will determine the new world champion, and other activities at the festival include daring watersports, sand sculptures, a heritage village and musicians.

“The Sharjah Water Festival since its inception has had tremendous success year after year, and we have a huge responsibility to maintain this success, pursuing excellence and constant improvement in all our activities. We are keen to come up with something new and uniquely exciting every year,” said Khalid Al Midfa, director general of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority.

“This year has been truly outstanding in many respects for Sharjah, as it was crowned the capital of Islamic culture for 2014. Next year will be even more exciting as we all look forward to Sharjah being crowned the capital of Arab tourism for 2015.”

Last year, an aqua circus, a petting zoo and a 360-square-metre outdoor ice rink were part of more than 100 events and 24 programmes that were held at the festival.
