DUBAI // A boardwalk is to be added along the entire length of Palm Jumeirah’s crescent by building over the breakwater rocks.
The width of the 11km path along the crescent on the man-made island will be doubled to about six metres as part of the plan.
Developer Nakheel said it had named Halcrow as the design consultant for the boardwalk. Tendering for construction will begin in the second quarter of this year.
More than 20 waterfront kiosks will be installed selling food, drinks and souvenirs.
Piers will also be built at either end of the crescent, stretching 100 metres into the Arabian Sea and offering panoramic views of the sea, the Dubai skyline and the Palm Jumeirah. Glass-enclosed restaurants and cafes will feature on both piers.
Initial plans for the boardwalk were announced by Nakheel at Cityscape 2013, as part of a plan to transform the crescent into a unique walking, shopping and dining destination.
The developer had earlier announced plans to create a 1.5km beach along the Palm’s western trunk.
“The Boardwalk at Palm Jumeirah, one of several new Nakheel projects underway on the island, is the latest example of the innovative design and engineering projects that we are known for,” a spokesman said.
“The new attraction will provide yet another unique facility for Palm residents, the wider UAE community and the millions of tourists who visit Dubai each year.”
