Organisers of Gala-Ballet performance come in for criticism as ticket holders, many of whom left before the end, complain of poor seating and missing stars.
DUBAI // A row has broken out between ballet lovers and the organisers of a Gala-Ballet performance at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Friday night that was “poorly organised and a total disaster”.
Ticket-holders said the floor plan at the theatre was nothing like the multi-level venue seen online and that two world-class dancers who were advertised to dance did not turn up.
Milene Bizachi, 36, from the UK, said that the show, for which the audience had paid between Dh380 and Dh780, was “really bad” and not what she expected from a night of ballet.
“The seats people bought did not exist, there was no clear view to the stage, it was an hour late to start and over 200 people walked away,” she said.
She said security got involved when people began shouting and arguing with organisers.
Ms Bizachi said she contacted the organisers, Magic Crown Entertainment, for a refund.
“They have asked me to email them, and I still haven’t received a reply from them,” she said.
Juliana Leite, 41, from Brazil, said she and her six-year-old daughter were extremely disappointed with the show.
“It was a total disaster. I was in shock and without words when I walked in to see an empty flat floor with folding chairs,” she said.
“How can one see a ballet? See people move? It’s just impossible, especially for a six-year-old.”
Ms Leite said she bought two tickets online for the front row of the middle level for Dh1,160. However, the floor plan was completely different when she arrived, she said.
“My ticket was for Row 31, and even though the row said 31, it was not in the front as shown online, it was the last row,” she said, adding that there were no levels to the venue.
“It was a circus, it didn’t look like a theatre. It looked like someone came in at the last-minute and put this together.”
Ms Leite also said that she talked to organisers to demand a refund and was asked to send an email to the company. “It was a joke,” she said.
Raghda Helal, 31, from Egypt, said the organisation of the event was “unacceptable”.
“I was really upset about the show, and I left 45 minutes into it, during the first break,” she said.
“It’s a shame because the dancers were beautiful, but we were already frustrated that the show started an hour late, the sound was horrible and we could not see a thing.”
Ms Helal said she and her boyfriend were supposed to be seated in White D41, but the row did not exist.
“They put us anywhere, and in other people’s seats, who were, rightfully, upset,” she said. “Even before the show started, customers were arguing with the organisers, because as soon as you entered the venue you knew something was wrong.”
The Gala-Ballet was advertised by Magic Crown Entertainment (MCE) as special performances from Russian Natalia Osipova and Sergei Polunin, from Ukraine.
MCE said that the two invited dancers were replaced by Ukrainian Iana Salenko and Australian Steven McRae due to “unpredictable circumstances”, adding that Osipova was unable to perform after an injury she sustained during rehearsal.
“This incident was announced in all media. We have also changed these two names in all advertisement resources straight after this incident took place,” said an MCE spokeswoman, who added that refunds would be given to those who complained but did not watch the show.
A second show was scheduled to take place at the same venue the following night but it was cancelled due to “poor ticket sales”.
“We have all their contact details and will get back to them but those who stayed for the whole performance will not get the refund as the show took place, even though it was delayed,” she said.
The floor plan changed due to the poor ticket sales, the spokeswoman added.
“We sold only 1,000 tickets. Due to this, we changed the seating plan, reducing it from 4,000 people to 2,000. In fact, we upgraded everyone’s seat to higher category, meaning people got better and more expensive seats for the same price.”
MCE used the best audio equipment and the music was audible, she added, saying that the show was only delayed due to a fire alarm going off.

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.
What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.
What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.
What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
