DUBAI// An SOS alert system for Emiratis that can pinpoint their exact location in foreign countries in an emergency using their smartphone is to be released in the next few weeks.
The new feature is to be added to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ existing iPhone and Android app to help find Emiratis who may have got lost, caught up in social unrest or who are in need of urgent medical assistance while abroad.
Currently, the ministry’s app provides a range of services, including security updates on countries, visa requirements, map locations and contact details for UAE embassies and missions.
Once implemented, the new system, which should be available in a month, will allow users to alert embassy officials in any country if they need help using GPS technology to send staff and aid services to their location.
“We have had issues in the past where nationals have become lost or needed help but it has been difficult to locate them,” said Dr Saeed Al Dhaheri, adviser for information systems to the ministry.
“But with this technology they will be able to tell us where they are by simply pressing a button in the app and we can send help much faster.”
The feature is undergoing testing and development by students at the Higher Colleges of Technology across the country.
“The app in general has proved very popular with UAE nationals since it was launched in 2011,” said Dr Al Dhaheri, who was speaking on the sidelines of the Gitex Technology Week being held at the World Trade Centre in Dubai.
So far the current version of the app has been downloaded 26,000 times.
As well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Affairs Department announced plans for its own app designed to make it easier for people to donate to charity.
“We have 22 charities in Dubai and each of them has its own appeals and that can be confusing for people,” said Hamad Al Sayegh, a accountant with the department.
The Emirates Charity app will bring together all the different organisations into one easily manageable format.
“What this app will let users do is quickly identify where they want to donate and which charities they want to help.”
Users will be able to select from a range of categories, from giving money to aid people in their annual hajj pilgrimage, to helping needy families and orphans.
“The app will also allow people to check and make sure the money is going to where it is supposed to,” said Mr Al Sayegh.
“So for example, if someone says they need Dh10,000 in donations for a project and then reach that target but then continue to ask other people for more money, we will be able to check that.”
An Arabic version of the app is on show at Gitex but the final version, which will also be in English, is expected to be released in June next year for the iPhone and Android smartphones.

Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.
This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in various countries, which we don’t expect before Q1 2020. Until then, nothing changes. And since both companies will continue to largely operate separately after the acquisition, very little will change in either teams’ day-to-day operations post-close. Today’s news is a testament to the incredible business our team has worked so hard to build.
It’s a great day for the Middle East, for the region’s thriving tech sector, for Careem, and for Uber.

Sharrie Williams
The American singer is hugely respected in blues circles due to her passionate vocals and songwriting. Born and raised in Michigan, Williams began recording and touring as a teenage gospel singer. Her career took off with the blues band The Wiseguys. Such was the acclaim of their live shows that they toured throughout Europe and in Africa. As a solo artist, Williams has also collaborated with the likes of the late Dizzy Gillespie, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
