ABU DHABI // The latest LG Android smartphone will be launched in the UAE next month.
The LG G3 boasts “laser auto focus” for its 13 megapixel camera, designed to capture better pictures than its rivals, and an improved high-definition 5.5-inch screen.
A laser beam measures the distance to the object you are snapping and quickly adjusts the focus according to the conditions.
It also has a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera for those all-important “selfies”.
It also has a “timed selfie mode” that allows the user to start a three-second countdown by making a clenched fist gesture.
The display is said to be one of the sharpest on the market, with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels.
“We are confident the LG G3 will be a huge hit with UAE consumers as we have taken the smartphone to new heights,” said D Y Kim, president of LG Electronics Gulf.
“The LG G3 is an upgrade to the G2 with a range of upgraded features, including the industry-first Laser Auto Focus and the 5.5-inch Quad HD display, with four times the resolution of normal HD and two times higher resolution than a full HD display,” he said.
The phone has a metallic finish and will be available in three colours: metallic black, silk white and shine gold.
The G3 was first launched last month, with largely positive reviews from the tech community.
A price for the G3 has not yet been set for the UAE.

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.

TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US's most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out ballistic missiles as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 150 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then stationed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
