Apple unveiled three new iPhone models at its annual launch event in California on Tuesday, along with the much-anticipated news of a $5-a-month video service to compete with Netflix. Speaking to a full audience, chief executive Tim Cook said the iPhone 11 was “jam-packed with great new capabilities”. The iPhone 11 comes in six new colours, with a 6.1-inch liquid retina display and a sound virtualiser for “an incredible sound experience”. Its camera comes with faster auto focus and the ability to take ultra-wide shots. The range of iPhone 11 handsets come with more cameras than ever before, allowing multiple feeds and a rich variety of video-shooting that will be sure to capture the attention of filmmakers. The new iPhones have an “ultrawide” rear camera, allowing for a 120-degree shot. Apple launched Pro models alongside the basic iPhone 11, offering several cameras. The cheapest iPhone 11 model costs $699, while customers could fork out up to $1099 for the iPhone Pro Max at the top end. The A13 Bionic processor is an upgrade from previous incarnations and Apple claims that its central and graphics processing units beat any Android phone. Mr Cook also revealed two coming subscription services priced at $5 a month. Apple Arcade, a videogames deal offering exclusive access to games that do not feature in app fees, will become available on September 19. It will be followed by Apple TV+, a TV and movie-streaming platform that will make its first programmes available on November 1. Apple hopes it will compete with Disney+ and Netflix streaming services, although it is expected that the variety of content will not match its rivals at the start.
