Tickets for Madonna's Abu Dhabi concert this summer, with prices starting at Dh350 (US$95.28), are expected to go fast when sales begin on February 27. Shatha Al Romaithi, a spokeswoman for the concert's organiser, FLASH Entertainment, speaks about how the company's booking system copes with high demand.
How quickly do you expect the concert to sell out?
On Madonna's last tour in 2008-09 she averaged 41,000 people per show … She is a global icon. We anticipate demand in the region to be very high, particularly in the first 24 hours, and so urge fans to buy early to avoid disappointment.
How do you prevent your booking system crashing with high demand?
We introduced a world-class system to the region in September 2010 to cater for the Fifa Club World Cup [that year]. It was a huge success, with a capacity 181,000 people attending the tournament matches. While the system may slow slightly in the first few hours as internet traffic is at its highest, it is more than capable of handling the volume required. We have reliable and efficient platforms in place to ensure all 22,000 tickets can be purchased with minimal delay.
Has it ever crashed?
We have organised some very big concerts since we launched the new ticketing system in September 2010. Most recently, the Coldplay concert on New Year's Eve was the fastest-selling show we have had since the band last played here in 2009. The system worked perfectly and we experienced no delays.
What measures do you put in place to stop people buying tickets in bulk and selling them on at a higher price?
It is illegal to buy concert tickets and sell them on at inflated prices. We reserve the right to take appropriate measures, including ticket cancellation, should ticket touting be discovered. In line with international best practice in this area, we will also be limiting the quantity of tickets individuals are able to purchase at launch to eight tickets per transaction.
What challenges do you face in staging such a large concert?
We have staged many large concerts over the past few years - Paul McCartney, Metallica, Shakira, Coldplay, Rihanna, Kanye West, Prince, Beyoncé and many more. All of these events present the same particular challenges in areas such as production, operations, ticketing, crowd management, health and safety, etc. The Madonna concert will of course be a landmark moment for Abu Dhabi and the region, but we apply the same highly professional levels of care, diligence and responsibility to the staging of the event as any other.
What proportion of your bookings is from outside the UAE?
While the majority of our concertgoers are from the UAE, we do see people fly in for the shows from the GCC, Europe and as far afield as Canada.

Iran's dirty tricks to dodge sanctions
There’s increased scrutiny on the tricks being used to keep commodities flowing to and from blacklisted countries. Here’s a description of how some work.
1 Going Dark
A common method to transport Iranian oil with stealth is to turn off the Automatic Identification System, an electronic device that pinpoints a ship’s location. Known as going dark, a vessel flicks the switch before berthing and typically reappears days later, masking the location of its load or discharge port.
2. Ship-to-Ship Transfers
A first vessel will take its clandestine cargo away from the country in question before transferring it to a waiting ship, all of this happening out of sight. The vessels will then sail in different directions. For about a third of Iranian exports, more than one tanker typically handles a load before it’s delivered to its final destination, analysts say.
3. Fake Destinations
Signaling the wrong destination to load or unload is another technique. Ships that intend to take cargo from Iran may indicate their loading ports in sanction-free places like Iraq. Ships can keep changing their destinations and end up not berthing at any of them.
4. Rebranded Barrels
Iranian barrels can also be rebranded as oil from a nation free from sanctions such as Iraq. The countries share fields along their border and the crude has similar characteristics. Oil from these deposits can be trucked out to another port and documents forged to hide Iran as the origin.

Gough-Walters was born in Al Wasl Hospital in Dubai, raised in Sharjah, did not take up rugby seriously till she was 15, has a master’s in global governance and ethics, and once worked as an immigration officer at the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi. In the summer of 2021 she played for Wales against England in rugby league, in a match that was broadcast live on TV.

Another way to earn air miles
In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.
An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.
“If you use your HSBC credit card when shopping at our partners, you are able to earn Air Miles twice which will mean you can get that flight reward faster and for less spend,” says Paul Lacey, the managing director for Europe, Middle East and India for Aimia, which owns and operates Air Miles Middle East.
