Next book could be how to do it yourself

The Life: Khaled Mohamed Al Maskari, a technical engineer by training, wrote A Practical Guide to Business Writing in his spare time. He explains why.

Khaled Mohamed Al Maskari, a technical engineer by training, spent six years researching and writing A Practical Guide to Business Writing, which was published last year. He speaks about why he wrote the book and who it is aimed at.

Why did you write your book?

I was working as a technical engineer … in 2004 since I was very close to our new graduates in the field. I noticed that there was a gap in how to communicate their message accurately, effectively and to the point. I took a course with Michael Doherty [the director of Professional Communication Services, UK] called advanced business writing skills. The idea came (to me) during the session.

How did you go about researching the topic?

I started reading lots of books in this field, 50 books from Australia, Canada and I bought books online. When you read in two or three years only one [type of] book in business communication, by default after 10 books you get passionate. You know the techniques. People [would say] if you need anything go to Khaled Al Maskari, if you struggle with your emails, go to Khaled and he will do it for you.

How long did it take you to write?

Three years. I was [working] in the field during that time and we had to stay overnight so it gave me time alone to write the book. So many people said what is Maskari doing? I was just so passionate about the book.

How many books have you sold?

Almost 1,000. The book is available now in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and the Apple iBook store, which was really an achievement.

Was it easy to get the book published?

It was self-published. In 2007, when I had almost finished the book I approached [a publisher] in Dubai. Then the financial crisis happened, so it wasn't a good time to support me. I told them OK, fine, I already signed for my part, you are delaying the contract, it's not my fault, so what are my options? They gave me two options - either do it myself, or wait for someone to sponsor me.

So you decided to self-publish. How much did it cost?

It was more than Dh50,000 (US$13,612). It was very expensive, because I had the book but I needed a design and a proof reader and all these things. You can't do it by yourself. I finished the book maybe two years [ago] but publishing took some time.

Do you think you will make your money back?

The most important thing is not the money. It's an investment, the most important thing for me is to convey a message to all talented people: do not give up. I wrote a book in English. It was not easy. If you have a vision and a clear target do not let others tear you down.

Why did you write the book in English?

The majority of companies here in this region communicate in English.

Who is the book aimed at?

Fresh graduates who are joining the job market and [they need to communicate] in English. And any employees … who wish to improve their writing style.
