The new Hamad International airport in Doha is set to open in the second quarter of this year, the Qatar Airways chief executive said yesterday.
“It [the opening] will be done in two phases. One where all low-cost carriers and carriers that do not have transfer passengers move. And the second phase will be for full-service airlines and airlines that have transfer passengers,” said Akbar Al Baker of Qatar Airways.
The new airport will replace the current facility.
“We [Qatar Airways] will be at the new airport when it is fully operational. This will be during the second quarter of this year.”
Qatar is ramping up its infrastructure as it prepares to host the Fifa World Cup in 2022.
Mr Baker said that Qatar Airways was also considering the possibility of a revenue-sharing partnership with members of the oneworld alliance, which it joined in October.
It is the only Gulf carrier to join the alliance, whose members include airberlin, Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and British Airways.
“It will not just be revenue-sharing but also loss-sharing. We have to be able to support each other,” said Mr Al Baker.
