Organisers on Monday blamed an administrative error for the last-minute cancellation of a conference on the future of Iraq’s energy sector in Dubai.

The conference organiser Meed informed journalists early in the morning that Iraq Energy Projects would not be taking place because of issues relating to the licence for the event. Meed, which also publishes a weekly magazine, is rarely known to cancel events.

“The decision to cancel the event was made after it came to our attention that because of an administrative error, the correct and full licensing agreement for the specific requirements for the event was not in place,” a source close to Meed said. “Because of this we were unable to run the event as planned.

“The cancellation of one of our events is a rare occurrence in our 60-year history.”

Speakers at the event included the Iraqi electricity minister, members of parliament and experts and officials from the oil, gas and power sectors.

Meed is working with delegates to offer compensation.
