It glides across the London skyline dotted by towers including the famous "Gherkin" building and crosses the Thames on its way to one of the main Olympic venues.
The £60 million (Dh347.3m) Emirates Air Line cable car is set to open in time for this summer's London Games, with a launch scheduled for next Thursday. The cable car is a river crossing that travels a distance of 1.1km at heights of up to 90 metres between Greenwich and the Royal Docks.
Emirates Group has invested £36m in a 10-year sponsorship deal for the project.
Emirates will have its branding on the cable cars, which will run between two new stations, called Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks. There will also be branded content on television screens inside the gondolas.
"Emirates likes to be at the centre of the action, and a project straddling the River Thames in London provides a superb opportunity to further our presence in the UK, while supporting a new and innovative transport scheme," said Boutros Boutros, an Emirates communications executive. It is estimated that Emirates contributes more than £250m worth of tourism revenue to the UK every year through its flights to cities including London and Manchester.
The cable car is expected to be used by many such tourists, drawn by the views of London, and by commuters.
It will have the capacity to carry as many as 2,500 people every hour in each direction.
"It will open up access to jobs in the Royal Docks enterprise zone and attract businesses and investors to a previously under exploited area," said Boris Johnson, the London mayor .
The cable car also provides a direct link between the O2entertainment venue and ExCel, an exhibition centre, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec).
Both are venues for the Olympics. Adnec acquired the exhibition centre in 2008. It will host seven Olympic events, including boxing and judo, as well as six Paralympic events.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues

How to get exposure to gold
Although you can buy gold easily on the Dubai markets, the problem with buying physical bars, coins or jewellery is that you then have storage, security and insurance issues.
A far easier option is to invest in a low-cost exchange traded fund (ETF) that invests in the precious metal instead, for example, ETFS Physical Gold (PHAU) and iShares Physical Gold (SGLN) both track physical gold. The VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF invests directly in mining companies.
Alternatively, BlackRock Gold & General seeks to achieve long-term capital growth primarily through an actively managed portfolio of gold mining, commodity and precious-metal related shares. Its largest portfolio holdings include gold miners Newcrest Mining, Barrick Gold Corp, Agnico Eagle Mines and the NewMont Goldcorp.
Brave investors could take on the added risk of buying individual gold mining stocks, many of which have performed wonderfully well lately.
London-listed Centamin is up more than 70 per cent in just three months, although in a sign of its volatility, it is down 5 per cent on two years ago. Trans-Siberian Gold, listed on London's alternative investment market (AIM) for small stocks, has seen its share price almost quadruple from 34p to 124p over the same period, but do not assume this kind of runaway growth can continue for long
However, buying individual equities like these is highly risky, as their share prices can crash just as quickly, which isn't what what you want from a supposedly safe haven.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
