YouTube, which has become a global phenomenon, was founded in California on February 14, 2005, when three former PayPal staffers — Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim — activated the domain name YouTube.com.

The first video was not uploaded until April 23, 2005. Called Me at the Zoo, it features Karim, some elephants at San Diego Zoo and a 19-second commentary.

In the video, Karim reports: “All right, so here we are in front of the elephants. The cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long ... um ... trunks, and that’s, that’s cool. And that’s pretty much all there is to say.”

Since then, the site has exploded, with more than 1 billion users — and 300 hours of video uploaded to the site every minute. We’ve put together a list of the most-viewed videos over the past 10 years, which are also some of the most iconic.
