Take That star Gary Barlow lines up solo gig in Dubai

Gary Barlow is coming to the UAE for a one-off show. Hot off the sell-out success of his first solo tour in 14 years, the Take That singer has lined up a gig at the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre on October 17. It promises to be a showcase of his huge back catalogue of chart-topping hits, including Take That smashes such as Rule the World, Patience and Back For Good, along with more recent solo hits such as Let Me Go and the Elton John duet Face to Face. This show will be the finale to a solo tour promoting his latest album Since I Saw You Last, which has sold more than 700,000 copies, one of the top 10 albums of last year. Barlow said: "I'm very excited to round off such an enjoyable tour in such an incredible and iconic destination." Orange Is the New Black to screen in the UAE

The Emmy award-nominated prison drama Orange Is the New Black will premiere on GO by OSN next week. The critically acclaimed show, produced by the online video-streaming service Netflix, was in the running for 12 awards at last night's Emmy bash in California, an impressive feat for its debut season. The series stars Taylor Schilling as Piper, a respectable, professional woman whose relationship with a drug smuggler leads to a year-long prison term. She is forced to leave behind her fiancé Larry (the American Pie star Jason Biggs) to serve her time in a women's prison alongside an eccentric group of outspoken inmates, each with their own story and fascinating ways of dealing with prison life. All 13 episodes of season one will be available to stream from Monday. OSN will also be broadcasting the HBO drama The Leftovers, about the aftermath of an unexplained event during which two per cent of the world's population simply disappears. Hollywood legend left $10,000 to her pet pooch

The Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall, who died at the age of 89 this month, left US$10,000 (Dh36,730) to her dog in her will. The actress left behind a $26.6 million estate, according to contactmusic.com. Her grandsons will inherit $250,000 each, two longtime employees will share $35,000 and her pet pooch, a papillon called Sophie, was also provided for, papers filed on Friday at a New York court revealed. The rest of her estate, including her apartment in the Dakota building in Manhattan and its contents, will be split between her three children – Leslie Bogart, Stephen Humphrey Bogart and Sam Robards, who will be the dog's guardian. – IANS

Veteran Indian actor misses cinema’s golden years

Om Puri, who has maintained a fine balance between harder-hitting, quality films and commercial crowd-pleasers during his international acting career, says he misses high-quality filmmaking and rues the fact that the industry is increasingly reduced to simply moneymaking. "The best films were made in the 1950s and 1960s," said Puri, who won accolades recently for his work in the Hollywood film The Hundred-Foot Journey. Remembering an era dominated by the likes of Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand, the 63-year-old said: "It was the golden period because subjects were great, nice meaningful songs were there ... these days people forget new songs within two months. Cinema was more responsible in the 1950s and 1960s. Cinema has become irresponsible today and today moviemaking means moneymaking. Of course, some good films are being made these days, but I feel hard-hitting films are not really being made and most of the films are considered in terms of business." – IANS
