Gone Girl has nothing to fear at the box office
David Fincher's eagerly anticipated film Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck as an unhappily married man whose wife goes missing, scared off the horror movie Annabelle on its opening weekend, earning US$38million (Dh139m) at the North American box office. But it was a close-run battle, with Annabelle, about a couple terrorised by a possessed doll – a prequel to last year's The Conjuring – taking second spot with an impressive $37.2m. "It was virtually a photo-finish," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. "These two movies couldn't be more different. It shows how if the marketplace presents a diversity of product, audiences will come out." Annabelle is out now in the UAE and Gone Girl is scheduled to be released next week. – AP

Silverman’s edgy tribute to Joan Rivers on SNL
The comedian Sarah Silverman paid tribute to the late Joan Rivers with an affectionate but edgy "roast" of the controversial funnywoman when she hosted the long-running comedy show Saturday Night Live at the weekend. Silverman portrayed Rivers giving a speech in heaven alongside a panel that included a host of other dead celebrities, including the comedian Richard Pryor, the Apple boss Steve Jobs, the Queen singer Freddie Mercury and the actress Lucille Ball. During a risqué performance, Silverman poked fun at herself, Rivers and the other celebrities. The tribute was generally well received but it did prompt some to ask whether it had come too soon. Rivers, 81, died in New York last month after she stopped breathing during a routine throat operation at a clinic. – The National staff

The singer and actress Jennifer Hudson, who played Carrie's (Sarah Jessica Parker) assistant in the first film, told Dish Nation: "I think it might be [happening]. Somebody just came to me talking about that." Later, Parker and Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte, sent teasing tweets to each other that fanned the flames. Davis tweeted a photo of herself and Parker at the premiere of the second film with the message: "@SJP Miss YOU XOXOXO!! <3" and Parker responded: "@KristinDavis Me too you! Heard the news?
