Resciebelle Santiago was working as a singer in restaurants in Malaysia for several years, until a stint on a reality programme changed the course of her life. During a two-week holiday in Romania earlier this year, Santiago spontaneously walked in to open auditions for Romania's Got Talent, a franchise of the Got Talent singing competition.
The 26-year-old covered Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You and received a standing ovation from the four judges and the live studio audience. Santiago went on to reach the show's grand final last June, but lost out to Laura Bretan, a 13-year-old opera wunderkind.
Since appearing on the show, Santiago has left her job in Malaysia and is now focused on building a career in Romania, performing in shows across the country and appearing on Romanian television. This week, Santiago visited Manila to see her family and announced that she has been signed to record an album with Romania’s Cat Music.
"I've been signed to the biggest recording company in Romania, an affiliate of Sony Music," Santiago told Philippine Entertainment Portal. "I just recorded my first single, titled Fighter. The album will be first released in Romania and then internationally."
Santiago said the album will feature both English and Romanian songs, as well as collaborations with Romanian pop musicians.
“If I am fortunate enough – and God willing – I’d like to have my own solo concert here in the Philippines,” she said.
Santiago grew up poor in Manila. At age 15, she started performing as a singer in local bars. She previously appeared on Philippine television on the singing competition Pinoy Pop Superstar.
Maine Mendoza spotted in Abu Dhabi airport
Filipino actress Maine Mendoza was spotted during her stopover at the Abu Dhabi International Airport last Saturday. The 21-year-old star was flying from Morocco to Manila via Etihad Airways.
At the airport, her Filipino fans – both passengers and airport employees – were elated to see Mendoza, who was flying on her own and unaccompanied by any entourage. Several fans approached her for a picture and autograph. The same scene occurred when Mendoza arrived at Manila’s International Airport, where she drew a sizeable crowd around her as she walked out of the airport.
Mendoza, along with co-star Alden Richards, are the most popular on-screen couple in Philippine film and on television. Stormed by crowds wherever they go, they were in Morocco to shoot a documentary and a magazine cover. They apparently flew separately to avoid attention.
Their latest film, the romantic comedy Imagine You and Me, opened in UAE cinemas on July 28.
The Voice Kids Philippines off to final rounds
The third edition of The Voice Kids Philippines is down to its final nine contestants, with the celebrity coaches – music superstar Sharon Cuneta, Broadway sensation Lea Salonga and pop rocker Bamboo Mañalac – mentoring three singers each.
The current front-runners are 11-year-old John Carlo Tan, coached by Cuneta, and 7-year-old Yessha Hilkiah dela Calzada, mentored by Salonga.
“It’s a very physically – as well as vocally and emotionally and mentally – demanding time for them to do live shows,” said Salonga. “These kids are tough – aside from their voices, their minds and their hearts are strong.”
The forthcoming weeks will feature two more rounds of eliminations, concluding with a grand final on September 4.
The Voice Kids Philippines is open to contestants ages 7 to 13. It is currently the most-watched programme on Philippine television, according to surveys by AGB Nielsen and Kantar Media. It is broadcast worldwide, including in the UAE, on The Filipino Channel.
The show’s biggest success story is Darren Espanto, the runner-up of the show’s first season in 2014. Espanto has since released two chart-topping albums and toured worldwide, including a performance at last year’s Abu Dhabi Pinoy Music Festival.
Ari: My Life with a King selected for Japanese festival
Filipino director Carlo Enciso Catu's debut feature, the coming-of-age drama Ari: My Life with a King, has been selected to screen at the Fukuoka International Film Festival, which will be held from September 15 to 25 in the southern Japanese city.
It is the sole Philippine movie in the festival's main line-up of 13 films, which also includes Iraq's A Flag Without a Country (directed by Bahman Ghobadi), Iran's Radio Dreams (directed by Babak Jalali) and Fourth Direction from India (directed by Gurvinder Singh).
Ari: My Life with a King stars teenage actor Ronwaldo Martin, in his debut film appearance, as well as Francisco Guinto and Cecile Yumul. The movie won several awards at the Metro Manila Film Festival last December before screening in festivals in Houston, New York and Vancouver.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.

Keep it fun and engaging
Stuart Ritchie, director of wealth advice at AES International, says children cannot learn something overnight, so it helps to have a fun routine that keeps them engaged and interested.
“I explain to my daughter that the money I draw from an ATM or the money on my bank card doesn’t just magically appear – it’s money I have earned from my job. I show her how this works by giving her little chores around the house so she can earn pocket money,” says Mr Ritchie.
His daughter is allowed to spend half of her pocket money, while the other half goes into a bank account. When this money hits a certain milestone, Mr Ritchie rewards his daughter with a small lump sum.
He also recommends books that teach the importance of money management for children, such as The Squirrel Manifesto by Ric Edelman and Jean Edelman.

What is 'Soft Power'?
Soft power was first mentioned in 1990 by former US Defence Secretary Joseph Nye.
