This evergreen, also known as the Madagascar periwinkle, will bloom in summer

The Catharanthus roseus, or Madagascar periwinkle, is an evergreen sub-shrub that sprouts brightly coloured flowers. The species, which can grow to a metre tall, is native to Madagascar and has long been cultivated for herbal medicine and as an ornamental plant.

It’s popular in subtropical gardens, is drought tolerant and can bloom in the height of summer. Its hardiness makes it an ideal plant for any UAE garden, and it’s also known for having a long flowering period.

It prefers to be grown in full sun and well-drained soil, and is easily propagated from cuttings. Gardeners should prune the plant regularly to help encourage the development of a more compact plant that can be used as bedding or ground cover.

Finally, those with small children and pets should note that the plant can be toxic if it’s ingested.
