Nicole Kidman gets a surprise at Cannes

Nicole Kidman's red-carpet date travelled for 35 hours to join her in Cannes. Her husband, the musician Keith Urban, flew from Sydney to escort her up the famous Palais stairs. "As long as he's there, he's my rock, everything's fine. I feel a little out to sea if he's not there," said Kidman, who's in Cannes for the HBO movie Hemingway & Gellhorn and the noir The Paperboy, in which she co-stars with Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey. * AP

Cannes crowns Love as Europe sweeps awards

The Cannes film festival awarded Michael Haneke's Love, the wrenching tale of a man and his dying wife, the Palme d'Or on Sunday. The best actor award went to Denmark's Mads Mikkelsen, as a man falsely accused of molesting a child in The Hunt by Thomas Vinterberg. Two young Romanians, Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur, shared the best actress prize for their roles in Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills, about a young nun and her friend who falls victim to an exorcism. The runner-up Grand Prix award went to Reality, by Italy's Matteo Garrone, about a father driven mad by a quest to become a reality TV star. The UK's Ken Loach took the third place Jury Prize for his bittersweet comedy The Angels' Share. The one exception to the European line-up was Mexico's Carlos Reygadas, who took best director for his family drama After Darkness, Light. * AFP

Six tips to secure your smart home

Most smart home devices are controlled via the owner's smartphone. Therefore, if you are using public wi-fi on your phone, always use a VPN (virtual private network) that offers strong security features and anonymises your internet connection.

Keep your smart home devices’ software up-to-date. Device makers often send regular updates - follow them without fail as they could provide protection from a new security risk.

Use two-factor authentication so that in addition to a password, your identity is authenticated by a second sign-in step like a code sent to your mobile number.

Set up a separate guest network for acquaintances and visitors to ensure the privacy of your IoT devices’ network.

Change the default privacy and security settings of your IoT devices to take extra steps to secure yourself and your home.

Always give your router a unique name, replacing the one generated by the manufacturer, to ensure a hacker cannot ascertain its make or model number.
