The Dubai International Film Festival’s Cinema of the World section, unveiled yesterday, features works from some of brightest directors, producers and scriptwriters from around the world. They include:
• Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, a black comedy directed by Alejandro G Iñárritu, about an over-the-hill actor (played by Michael Keaton), famous for portraying an iconic superhero, as he struggles to restore his credibility as an actor by staging a Broadway play.
• J C Chandor's A Most Violent Year, a thriller set in New York during the winter of 1981, one of the most violent years in the city's history, as an immigrant family attempt to expand their business amid rampant violence, decay and corruption.
• I'm Steve Lopez by Rajeev Ravi, a coming-of-age tale about the teenage son of an influential police officer who gets caught up in gang violence.
• Writer-director Jamshid Mahmoudi's debut feature – and Afghanistan's entry for the foreign-language Oscar – A Few Cubic Metres of Love, which tells the story of a factory in Tehran that illegally employs Afghan asylum seekers.
• Céline Sciamma's Girlhood, the story of a girl struggling to find meaning in life in a tough suburban neighbourhood of Paris.
• What We Do in the Shadows, a horror mockumentary about a trio of vampires living in New Zealand and struggling to adapt to life in the 21st century, co-directed by and starring Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement.
• Snow, directed by Mehdi Rahmani, a view of Iran's struggling middle class.
• Reza Dormishian's I'm Not Angry!, a heartbreaking love story set in Tehran during the recent political protests.
• The Good Lie, directed by Philippe Falardeau, about the lives of children orphaned by the brutal Civil War in Sudan that began in 1983.
• Bikas Ranjan Mishra's Four Colors, about a boy in rural India who wants to go to school like his older brother but struggles in a village steeped in caste-hierarchy.
• X+Y, directed by Morgan Matthews, the tale of a socially awkward teenage maths prodigy as he struggles to connect with other people.

The Africa Institute 101
Housed on the same site as the original Africa Hall, which first hosted an Arab-African Symposium in 1976, the newly renovated building will be home to a think tank and postgraduate studies hub (it will offer master’s and PhD programmes). The centre will focus on both the historical and contemporary links between Africa and the Gulf, and will serve as a meeting place for conferences, symposia, lectures, film screenings, plays, musical performances and more. In fact, today it is hosting a symposium – 5-plus-1: Rethinking Abstraction that will look at the six decades of Frank Bowling’s career, as well as those of his contemporaries that invested social, cultural and personal meaning into abstraction.

Types of policy
Term life insurance: this is the cheapest and most-popular form of life cover. You pay a regular monthly premium for a pre-agreed period, typically anything between five and 25 years, or possibly longer. If you die within that time, the policy will pay a cash lump sum, which is typically tax-free even outside the UAE. If you die after the policy ends, you do not get anything in return. There is no cash-in value at any time. Once you stop paying premiums, cover stops.
Whole-of-life insurance: as its name suggests, this type of life cover is designed to run for the rest of your life. You pay regular monthly premiums and in return, get a guaranteed cash lump sum whenever you die. As a result, premiums are typically much higher than one term life insurance, although they do not usually increase with age. In some cases, you have to keep up premiums for as long as you live, although there may be a cut-off period, say, at age 80 but it can go as high as 95. There are penalties if you don’t last the course and you may get a lot less than you paid in.
Critical illness cover: this pays a cash lump sum if you suffer from a serious illness such as cancer, heart disease or stroke. Some policies cover as many as 50 different illnesses, although cancer triggers by far the most claims. The payout is designed to cover major financial responsibilities such as a mortgage or children’s education fees if you fall ill and are unable to work. It is cost effective to combine it with life insurance, with the policy paying out once if you either die or suffer a serious illness.
Income protection: this pays a replacement income if you fall ill and are unable to continue working. On the best policies, this will continue either until you recover, or reach retirement age. Unlike critical illness cover, policies will typically pay out for stress and musculoskeletal problems such as back trouble.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
