How you can donate clean drinking water to the needy by visiting The Dubai Mall this Ramadan

Dubai Culture is donating water to communities with no access to clean drinking water, and another campaign promotes The Year of Tolerance

If you're heading to The Dubai Mall this week, keep an eye out for some heart-warming Ramadan initiatives.

This Thursday, the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority is launching a community campaign called Well of Hope to shed light on the global issue of water scarcity. It will also provide the needy and those living in remote areas with access to clean drinking water.

The campaign is part of the Arab Hope Makers initiative, launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

Pump your own water for those less fortunate

An important aspect of the campaign will be a new mobile virtual water pumping device in the mall, which will allow visitors to have a go at pumping water themselves.

The volume of "virtual" water pumped will then be donated to those less fortunate by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.

The campaign will also feature live painting sessions by a number of acclaimed and up-and-coming artists, including a mural by Diaa Allam, a calligrapher and live art performer based in Ajman.

Hala Badri, Director General at Dubai Culture, said: "With this campaign, Dubai Culture is inviting the community to get together and mark the holy month of Ramadan with the charitable act of gifting water to people who walk miles every day in search of it.

"Well of Hope seeks to inculcate a culture of giving and support the value of compassion in the society and position Dubai as a regional and an international hub for humanitarian and voluntary work.”

Or make your own calligraphy art

Also in partnership with The Dubai Mall, Dubai Culture has launched an interactive display called Quran Tech, which allows visitors to create their own piece of calligraphy by using the inbuilt library of artworks by internationally renowned calligraphers.

Users are able to select verses from the Quran, available in six languages. Once you have made your selection, you can then pick a calligraphy style, border and background, and can then  print it out and take it away as a gift.

The initiative, which was launched last week, aims to promote the Year of Tolerance and will run until May 27.

Well of Hope begins on May 23, from 8pm until 1am at The Dubai Mall.
