Jolie quits job to avoid Pitt

Actress-director Angelina Jolie has reportedly pulled out of a movie so that she doesn't have to work with estranged husband Brad Pitt. The Hollywood couple, who have worked on two films together, Mr & Mrs Smith and By The Sea, spent several years trying to get Africa into production. The film is a biopic about archaeologist Richard Leakey, who championed the end of elephant poaching. "This movie has been a nightmare to get off the ground from the beginning. Until the last few weeks, Jolie was resolute in her intent to get it made, but now she doesn't want to direct it at all," a source told Heat Street. The couple was reportedly set to begin work on the film next year with Pitt in the lead role. Africa has been in pre-production for several years and has been plagued with several creative differences between Jolie and Skydance Productions, who are producing the movie. The news comes on the back of the announcement at the weekend that the FBI had launched an investigation into allegations that Pitt assaulted his son Maddox on a private plane last week. – IANS

Simon Cowell wants to sign Cruz Beckham

Music mogul Simon Cowell reportedly wants to sign Cruz Beckham, son of star couple David and Victoria Beckham, to his record label. The 11-year-old made a good impression on Cowell when they met previously. "Get him in and we will sign him," Cowell told The Sun newspaper. "I met them when they were younger, and I have to say they are really incredible kids. They could have been really spoilt, but they weren't. They were really funny when they came down to one of the shows. I know the Beckhams get criticised for being in the public eye, but if you are in the public eye, your kids are going to be, too." – IANS

Junior chef cooks for Ellen

Young chef and YouTube sensation Nihal Raj, also known as Kicha, put his cookery skills on display on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The six-year-old from Kochi, India, found fame after launching the KichaTube HD channel last year, attracting more than 7,000 subscribers to date. "Well, if you have ever wondered why Ellen hasn't had an adorable six-year-old chef from India, then today is your day. Please welcome Kicha," said DeGeneres when introducing Raj on the show. When asked about his first visit to the United States, Raj said: "It's been fun." The young cook proceeded to show DeGeneres how to make puttu, a traditional breakfast dish. After tasting the food, DeGeneres remarked: "It's very delicious." – IANS

Truman Capote ashes are sold

Some people will pay good money for anything involving the late American novelist, screenwriter and actor Truman Capote – including his remains. Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles has announced that Capote's ashes, which are contained in a Japanese wooden box, have sold for US$45,000 (Dh165,282). The amount is considerably higher than the original estimate of $4,000. The ashes are dated August 28, 1984, days after the author of Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood died, at age 59. Capote's ashes had previously been in the possession of Joanne Carson, close friend and ex-wife of Johnny Carson, who died last year. – AP

Who was Alfred Nobel?

The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.

  • In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
  • Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
  • Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.
Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026

1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years

If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.

2. E-invoicing in the UAE

Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.

3. More tax audits

Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.

4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime

Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.

5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit

There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.

6. Further transfer pricing enforcement

Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.

7. Limited time periods for audits

Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.

8. Pillar 2 implementation

Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.

9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services

Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.

10. Substance and CbC reporting focus

Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.

What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.

The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.

Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.

However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.

Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.
