Amitabh Bachchan walks fashion ramp for charity

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan took part in a charity runway showing in Mumbai earlier this week for designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Bachchan, along with actors Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Iulia Vantur, Sonali Bendre and entrepreneur Sussanne Khan, took to the ramp at the 12th annual edition of Fevicol Caring with Style fashion show in association with the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA). Big B on Sunday shared a few photographs from the event on social media. “Walk the ramp for a charity that works for the cure of children from blood cancer ... every child deserves to live long and healthy,” Amitabh tweeted. The 73-year-old actor also wrote on his blog that each child deserves a long and complete life and a healthy one. “Donating to the cause is providing that opportunity to give the unfortunately ill another life,” he added. Big B was seen sporting an all-black bandhgala kurta with white floral embroidery and pyjama. Funds raised from the show will be donated to the CPAA towards treatment of children suffering from blood cancer. — IANS

Oscars blunder prompts probe as Moonlight takes best picture

Oscars officials are investigating Sunday's embarrassing mix-up over best picture, which eventually went to African-American coming-of-age drama Moonlight, after a ceremony studded with political jokes and minor mishaps. In a mistake that stunned the Dolby Theatre crowd in Hollywood and television audiences worldwide, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway at first said the winner was romantic musical La La Land. As both films' casts stood awkwardly on stage, Beatty explained he had received the wrong envelope. PricewaterhouseCoopers, which oversees the ballots, confirmed the error. "We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred," the professional services firm said in a statement while apologising to Moonlight, La La Land, Beatty, Dunaway and Oscars viewers. — Reuters

Virtual banks explained

What is a virtual bank?

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority defines it as a bank that delivers services through the internet or other electronic channels instead of physical branches. That means not only facilitating payments but accepting deposits and making loans, just like traditional ones. Other terms used interchangeably include digital or digital-only banks or neobanks. By contrast, so-called digital wallets or e-wallets such as Apple Pay, PayPal or Google Pay usually serve as intermediaries between a consumer’s traditional account or credit card and a merchant, usually via a smartphone or computer.

What’s the draw in Asia?

Hundreds of millions of people under-served by traditional institutions, for one thing. In China, India and elsewhere, digital wallets such as Alipay, WeChat Pay and Paytm have already become ubiquitous, offering millions of people an easy way to store and spend their money via mobile phone. Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines are also among the world’s biggest under-banked countries; together they have almost half a billion people.

Is Hong Kong short of banks?

No, but the city is among the most cash-reliant major economies, leaving room for newcomers to disrupt the entrenched industry. Ant Financial, an Alibaba Group Holding affiliate that runs Alipay and MYBank, and Tencent Holdings, the company behind WeBank and WeChat Pay, are among the owners of the eight ventures licensed to create virtual banks in Hong Kong, with operations expected to start as early as the end of the year.
