Hot off the back of his recent collaboration with H&M, Alexander Wang has added a new string to his already bursting bow: a capsule collection of lounge furniture.
While Wang has already tried his hand at smaller decorative accessories, he teamed up with the historic Italian company Poltrona Frau for his first foray into furniture. The collection consists of two beanbag-style seats and the Trunk Bar, which come together to create an intimate “hang out” space. For the seats, sumptuous black full-grain leather is paired with a geometric bronze-plated steel base, while the portable bar, which can double up as a side table, is made from matte black shagreen.
The pieces have Wang written all over them – in the signature use of the colour black; in the brass hardware trimming at the bottom of the seats, which calls to mind the studded underside of Wang’s iconic Rocco bag; and in the way that Wang has taken something that is essentially banal and given it a good old sprucing up, much like he did with his “athleisure” collection for H&M.
“I always loved the idea of hanging out in a basement on beanbags, but taking that youthfulness and recontextualising it into something very luxurious and aspirational,” says Wang, who is the creative director of Balenciaga as well as his own eponymous label.
The collection was two years in the making, and will be available in select Poltrona Frau showrooms around the world from the end of April. The beanbag chairs retail at $8,800 (Dh32,320) a piece, while the Trunk Bar will sell for $18,500 (Dh67,940).
