Not so long ago (OK, maybe around a decade), virtual reality headsets were set to take over the world, transporting wearers into three-dimensional virtual worlds. Sadly, they never really caught on, but at this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, they’ve made a dramatic return. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, Oculus VR unveiled its new Oculus Rift, a headset that looks more like a pair of ski goggles that comes armed with stereoscopic 3D, low-latency head tracking and a 110-degree field of view. Sony, Microsoft and others are reportedly working on similar devices. Don’t hold your breath just yet, but the true age of virtual reality could soon be upon us.
