Fashion notes: These boots are made for wearing

When I first moved to the UAE 11 years ago, I couldn’t help but laugh when girls would bring out their Ugg boots during the winter months. Having experienced the snowy terrains of New York and Toronto, I couldn’t imagine why, when winter weather is warm enough for sandals, women would choose to bury their feet in fur-lined boots. Now, a decade later, I sort of understand.

Lately, the urge to diversify my footwear has pushed me to question my perhaps too-practical approach to shopping.

I’ve always been of the mindset that, since boots can only really be worn for three months of the year here, there’s no point in buying them. But, the glitter sock boots, velvet ankle boots and jacquard printed boots currently in stores have made me reconsider.

If we cut out boots from our shoe wardrobes entirely, we’re missing out on key style trends. Whether they’re block-heeled, lace-up or metallic, the boots of this season are worthy fashion buys. Once the winter months slip by us and temperatures rise again, the opportunity will be lost.

Plus, the weather right now is not “too hot” to wear boots – even if they are lined in fur (faux, I hope), your feet aren’t likely to sweat. So, they really aren’t entirely impractical purchases.

Does it sounds like I'm justifying myself? Probably because I am – I have yet to click "add to cart" underneath the floral brocade sock boots in my list of saved items at Asos.com, and perhaps writing this is my way of convincing myself – and all of you – that even if they'll be worn for a handful of weeks each year, boots are by no means inappropriate buys in the Middle East.

So, seek out styles that will still be on-trend next year and the year after, and buy your boots before the month comes to a close.
