Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are Critics’ Choice

Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones tied for the top prize for drama at the Critics' Choice Television Awards on Monday, while The Big Bang Theory won Best Comedy. The show's stars Kaley Cuoco and Simon Helberg also won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, who won Best Actor in a Drama Series for the second consecutive year, thanked the critics, saying: "If you were not a conduit, we would not be anywhere." Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the star of Veep, won for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, while Louis C?K of Louie picked up Best Actor in a Comedy Series. One of the big surprises of the night came from the little-known Tatiana Maslany from the BBC America drama Orphan Black, in which she plays a woman with several identities. She won Best Actress in a Drama Series, beating last year's Homeland winner Claire Danes. – Reuters

Ted Dwane’s surgery halts Mumford & Sons tour

The English folk-rock band Mumford & Sons on Tuesday postponed three sell-out shows on their US tour while bassist Ted Dwane undergoes surgery for a blood clot. Writing on their website, the group – the winners of this year's Grammy for Best Album – said scans had revealed a blood clot on the surface of Dwane's brain that requires immediate treatment. "Ted is receiving excellent care and we are being assured that he will recover quickly from surgery," they said, without disclosing where the operation will take place. Dwane, who plays upright bass, turns 29 on August 15. – AFP

Ringo Starr writes Octopus’s Garden as kids’ book

Ringo Starr is turning an old Beatles favourite into a children's book. The drummer has a deal with Simon & Schuster's Children Books for Octopus's Garden, based on one of the few songs the drummer wrote and sang while with The Beatles. The book will be released in early 2014. Starr, who turns 73 next month, first wrote the song while on Peter Sellers' yacht in 1968. Octopus' Garden first appeared on The Beatles' Abbey Road album, released in 1969. – AP

Krysten Ritter signed for Tim Burton’s new film Big Eyes

Krysten Ritter has moved on after the cancellation of her television series Don't Trust the B in Apt 23. The actress has been cast in Tim Burton's next film, Big Eyes, which will also feature Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. The movie chronicles the real-life story of Margaret and Walter Keane (Adams and Waltz, respectively), the married couple whose paintings of large-eyed children became one of the first mass-marketed art sensations of the 1950s. Ritter is currently filming the comedy Search Party with Alison Brie and Adam Pally. – IANS
