Truman Capote's 1958 typed manuscript of Breakfast at Tiffany's with the author's handwritten edits has sold for about US$306,000 (Dh1.1 million) at auction to a Russian billionaire. The manuscript, expected to net at least $250,000, was offered for sale online by the Amherst-based auction house RR Auction. RR Auction says the winning bidder is the Russian retail billionaire Igor Sosin, who plans to display it in Moscow and Monaco. Capote's handwritten notes include changing the femme fatale's name from Connie Gustafson to Holly Golightly. – AP
Dev Benegal at Sci-Fi-London festival
The award-winning filmmaker Dev Benegal has been chosen as a jury member for the 48 Hour Film Challenge at the Sci-Fi-London Film Festival this year. Kristen Wiig to return to SNL as host
A year after leaving Saturday Night Live, Kristen Wiig is back. NBC announced on Friday that Wiig will host the May 11 episode. For six seasons, Wiig was one of the most popular cast members on the show before exiting in an emotional send-off last May. Vampire Weekend will perform as the musical guest. The network also announced that the season finale on May 18 will be hosted by Ben Affleck, with Kanye West as the musical guest. It's Affleck's fifth stint as host. – AP
Pulp Fiction car found 19 years later
The classic Chevrolet convertible featured in the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction has been found nearly two decades after it was reported stolen, in 1994. The San Bernardino County Sun said Tarantino's 1964 Chevelle Malibu was recovered in the San Francisco Bay area earlier this week. OSN brings Filipino entertainment to TV
OSN has partnered with ABS-CBN, the world's largest Filipino TV network, to bring viewers in the Middle East and North Africa the best in Pinoy entertainment. Starting Wednesday, OSN will broadcast four new ABS-CBN channels, including TFC (The Filipino Channel), the network's flagship entertainment channel; Bro, dedicated to sports and entertainment; Cinema One Global, which will broadcast movies; and ANC (ABS-CBN News Channel), a 24-hour news channel. The four channels are popular among the three million-strong Filipinos in the region. OSN already offers more than 40 channels through its Pinoy packages. Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
