That’s (nearly) her real name
Grande was reportedly named after Princess Oriana, a character from the Felix the Cat cartoons. Of Italian descent, Grande's full surname is the double-barrelled Grande-Butera, taking the name of both her mother Joan Grande (a telephone-and-alarm company boss) and father Edward Butera (owner of a graphic-design firm), who reportedly separated when Grande was about 8 years old.
She started young
That was also the age Grande was when she appeared on national television for the first time, performing American national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of a Florida Panthers ice hockey game – the footage is on YouTube.
Performing runs in the family
Grande's older half-brother is Frankie Grande, a stage actor who has appeared in Broadway productions of Mamma Mia! and Rock of Ages, and is now an established TV and YouTube personality.

In 2008, Grande received her big stage break, winning a supporting role in Broadway musical 13 – for which she won a National Youth Theatre Association Award. While in the Big Apple, she also landed after-hours gigs singing at Birdland, the historic jazz club opened in 1949 to honour saxophone legend Charlie Parker.
... and by 16, she was on TV
In 2009, Grande successfully auditioned for a role in the Nickelodeon sitcom Victorious – which quickly began to open many other doors. Playing redhead Cat Valentine, Grande was quickly established as a fan favourite. Her first recorded music appeared on a series of soundtrack albums, and when Victorious was cancelled in 2012, she took a role in spin-off show Sam & Cat, alongside iCarly star Jennette McCurdy. The show ended in July last year, but Grande had already moved onto a career in music by then.
She disowned her first single
While acting in Victorious, Grande began uploading impressive cover version of songs by artists including Adele and her biggest influence, Mariah Carey, to YouTube. She was soon signed to Republic Records, and debut single Put Your Hearts Up was released in December 2011. Despite achieving gold-record sales – yet failing to scrape a chart position – a disappointed Grande distanced herself from its adolescent style. She waited until March 2013 to release a follow-up.
Next time she got things right
Reportedly three years in the making, and preceded by hit singles The Way (featuring Mac Miller) and Baby I, Grande's debut album, Yours Truly, was an instant success, debuting at the top of the US Billboard charts in September 2013. Grande co-wrote six of the 12 tracks. The year ended with the moderately successful Christmas Kisses EP, and she scored another minor hit with a cover of Wham!'s classic 1980s hit, Last Christmas.
And then it all took off really quickly ...
In many ways, that was all an audition for what was to come with sophomore album My Everything, which announced the arrival of a new mature, adult artist, through collaborations with a raft of A-listers. Grande's coming out party last year went like this: first the multi-platinum Iggy Azalea collaboration Problem, in April. The Zedd hookup Break Free followed in July, and then the triple whammy of Bang Bang, which gave Grande equal billing alongside chart mainstays Nicki Minaj and Jessie J. When the full album arrived in August, it was already among the year's biggest events, hitting the Top 10 in more than 20 countries, and topping the charts stateside. September's Love Me Harder, alongside The Weeknd, rounded off an incredible year.
Expect to hear a lot more soon
While much of this year has been devoted to her 92-date Honeymoon Tour – which wraps in Japan less than a week after Thursday's Abu Dhabi show – work is close to completion on her third album, Moonlight. First single Focus might have reminded some listeners of Problem, but it still did tidy business, hitting No 7 on the Billboard charts. Grande isn't going anywhere any time soon.

If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”

Key findings
- Over a period of seven years, a team of scientists analysed dietary data from 50,000 North American adults.
- Eating one or two meals a day was associated with a relative decrease in BMI, compared with three meals. Snacks count as a meal. Likewise, participants who ate more than three meals a day experienced an increase in BMI: the more meals a day, the greater the increase.
- People who ate breakfast experienced a relative decrease in their BMI compared with “breakfast-skippers”.
- Those who turned the eating day on its head to make breakfast the biggest meal of the day, did even better.
- But scrapping dinner altogether gave the best results. The study found that the BMI of subjects who had a long overnight fast (of 18 hours or more) decreased when compared even with those who had a medium overnight fast, of between 12 and 17 hours.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
