Netflix Middle East has launched the first look trailer for the forthoming Star Trek relaunch, Star Trek: Discovery. We don’t learn too much from the 1.27 minute clip, but we do meet first officer Michael Burnham, who will be the focus of the series in a break from past shows that have been largely ensemble pieces with the Captain, be it Kirk, Picard or Janeway, at the helm. Burnham was raised by Vulcans, and this seems to have caused some ongoing issues for the first officer - issues that perhaps she has worked through before Leonard Nimoy’s half-Vulcan Dr Spock becomes second in command of the Starship Enterprise in the original show, which the latest version precedes by 10 years. One thing that is clear from the trailer is that the budget for the latest version is significantly higher than for the much-loved, but slightly cheap, sixties original. Perhaps unsurprising given that the combined financial might of Netflix, CBS and Bell Media have produced the new show. We also learn that Burnham has served alongside her current captain for seven years, and we see some Klingon ships, so we have a fair guess at who at least one set of baddies will be in the forthcoming space adventure. Beyond that, it’s all still up in the air. Or in outer space. Star Trek: Discovery is set to screen at an as yet unspecified date this Autumn, initially on CBS and Bell in the US and Canada respectively, then on Netflix worldwide, including the Middle East, 24 hours later.
