DUBAI // Kim Kardashian had to take a rain check on her date with a bottlenose dolphin on Wednesday after a sandstorm swept through Dubai.
The 30-year-old American television reality star was scheduled to play with the dolphins at Atlantis, The Palm hotel soon after landing in the Emirates.
However, the weather would not play along with her plans, also forcing her to cancel a camel ride on the beach.
"There can be no outdoor activity during a sandstorm, and we had to bring all our guests to safety inside, secure the beach and pool areas," said Serge Zaalof, the chief operating officer of Atlantis. "But she will definitely meet the dolphins. It's a must-do here."
Kardashian is visiting for four days on her first trip to the UAE. Along with her mother, Kris Jenner, she is launching the first Millions of Milkshakes store outside the US.
The launch will take place on Friday at the Dubai Mall, and Kardashian will hold a press conference on Thursday to announce the store opening.
The star, who along with her sisters is featured on E!'s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and whohas appeared on Dancing with the Stars, tweeted to her 10 million followers as soon as she landed in the city.
"Wow, I'm in such awe over Dubai!" she wrote. "My hotel is so insane, can't wait to do some blogs [and] show u guys! Too much to tweet! I'm obsessed with Dubai!"
She relaxed yesterday in a three-bedroom suite, which features a private lift, a media centre and a gold leaf dining table that seats up to 16 people. Some pampering in a spa was also on the agenda before she switched gears into work mode.
Hotel staff described her as friendly, with plenty of positive things to say about the city.
"Despite her 15-hour flight, she was pleasant and talked about her trip," Mr Zaalof said. "She talked about already being impressed with Dubai all the way from the airport through Sheikh Zayed Road to the Palm."
Kardashian is also reportedly scoping out Dubai for a possible fourth outpost of the clothing store Dash that she runs with her sisters. This would be in addition to outlets in Los Angeles, Miami and New York.
Despite her fame and many appearances in magazines and tabloid newspapers, some visitors at the hotel struggled to place her.
"Kim? The girl from that fashion television show?" asked Keri David, an 18-year-old American student on holiday with her family.
"I didn't know she was staying here. I'll keep a watch out, if I can post some pictures that would be neat."
"Who did you say?" asked Emily Saunders, 50, a British tourist on her second visit to Dubai. "I think I must keep track of celebrities when I'm visiting Dubai. The last time we were here there was someone else from Hollywood."
