The eye-popping stage show Shadowland is coming to Dubai in September.
The spectacle, which has already been watched by over one million people in 30 countries, will come to the UAE for three days at the Dubai World Trade Centre beginning from September 13.
The show, which international critics acclaimed for its sensory thrills and beauty, blends various artistic disciplines including ballet, circus, shadow theatre with multimedia images.
Amongst all that movement and visuals on stage is a good-old-fashioned fantasy tale.
Set at night, the show begins with a teenage girl going to sleep. When she lies on her bed the four walls of her bedroom spin and ultimately takes her to a mystical new world. Lost and trying to find her way home, she encounters various creatures on her journey who range from the comic and mysterious to evil.
With each of the cast characterised through their own set of dance and visuals, Shadowland is landmark project for Pilobolus for its sheer scale and vision.
“Shadowland is Pilobolus’s first evening length show, and we are really excited to stage our show for the Dubai audience,” said co-artistic director Robby Barnett.
"It is amazing that shadows, something we thought we always knew, have emerged at this point in Shadowland's life as a new medium and storytelling form. It makes me proud to have had the chance to be a part of something that was really a global phenomenon."
The personnel behind the show is another indication of the show's unique approach. Developed in 2009, the company's artistic directors collaborated on the script with Steven Banks, who is the lead writer for the much loved television cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
Another feature of the show is the modern soundtrack provided by David Poe.
The US singer-songwriter has found success on his own right through a mix of solo albums and performing alongside the likes of luminaries Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.
Commissioned specifically for the Shadowland project, Poe's compositions are mixture of mid-tempo folk-rock tunes and intimate ballads on acoustic guitar.

Formed in 1971 by students from Dartmouth University, the company was created with the aim of breaking down performance and artistic barriers. Ever since, they have performed original works, provided workshops and even ran summer camps in the US tailor made for creatives.
In addition to their UAE tour, this year will also see the world premiere of their latest production Come to Your Senses in August in Connecticut.

Treaty of Friendship between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates
The United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates; Considering that the United Arab Emirates has assumed full responsibility as a sovereign and independent State; Determined that the long-standing and traditional relations of close friendship and cooperation between their peoples shall continue; Desiring to give expression to this intention in the form of a Treaty Friendship; Have agreed as follows:
ARTICLE 1 The relations between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates shall be governed by a spirit of close friendship. In recognition of this, the Contracting Parties, conscious of their common interest in the peace and stability of the region, shall: (a) consult together on matters of mutual concern in time of need; (b) settle all their disputes by peaceful means in conformity with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.
ARTICLE 2 The Contracting Parties shall encourage education, scientific and cultural cooperation between the two States in accordance with arrangements to be agreed. Such arrangements shall cover among other things: (a) the promotion of mutual understanding of their respective cultures, civilisations and languages, the promotion of contacts among professional bodies, universities and cultural institutions; (c) the encouragement of technical, scientific and cultural exchanges.
ARTICLE 3 The Contracting Parties shall maintain the close relationship already existing between them in the field of trade and commerce. Representatives of the Contracting Parties shall meet from time to time to consider means by which such relations can be further developed and strengthened, including the possibility of concluding treaties or agreements on matters of mutual concern.
ARTICLE 4 This Treaty shall enter into force on today’s date and shall remain in force for a period of ten years. Unless twelve months before the expiry of the said period of ten years either Contracting Party shall have given notice to the other of its intention to terminate the Treaty, this Treaty shall remain in force thereafter until the expiry of twelve months from the date on which notice of such intention is given.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF the undersigned have signed this Treaty.
DONE in duplicate at Dubai the second day of December 1971AD, corresponding to the fifteenth day of Shawwal 1391H, in the English and Arabic languages, both texts being equally authoritative.
