This year’s Grammys by the numbers

The number of Grammy Awards that will be given out this year – four more than in 2013. The new gongs, approved by the Recording Academy, are for Best American Roots Song, Best Music Video and Best Music Film. The previous Hard Rock/Metal Performance award has been split up, with the Best Metal Performance getting its own trophy, while the hard rockers will now battle it out in the already-existing award for Best Rock Performance.

Lorde’s age. The ethereal New Zealand singer-songwriter is the youngest nominee this year. She is up for four awards on Sunday, with her debut Pure Heroine listed for Best Pop Album and the single Royals in the running for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

The number of nominations for Jay Z. The American rapper, who leads the list, hopes to make it rain with Grammys this year, with nominations including Best Rap Album for Magna Carta Holy Grail and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Part II (On The Run) featuring his boo Beyoncé.

The number of former sitcom stars battling it out for the Best Comedy Album. The Full House star Bob Saget (That’s What I’m Talkin’ About) is up against Suddenly ­Susan’s Kathy Griffin (Calm Down Gurrl) and The Drew Carey Show’s Craig Ferguson (I’m Here to Help). May the best joker win.

Nominations for One Direction. The British boy group’s chart dominance meant nothing to The Recording Academy this year. The only nominee benefiting from their fame is the American pop-producer Dr Luke whose body of work – including the single Rock Me – has him shortlisted for the Producer of the Year Award (Non Classical).
