Liam Payne has advice for members of the girl group Fifth Harmony.
Speaking to The National on Friday, a few hours before his packed solo performance at Dubai's Global Village, the singer said he sympathised with the plight of the US pop band who recently announced their "hiatus" a few days after their concert at Abu Dhabi's du Forum on March 16.
The 24-year-old Payne was a member of the UK's superstar boy band One Direction, who announced their indefinite break in 2016. With that experience behind him, he explains that each member of Fifth Harmony should engage in a period of soul searching before deciding their next move.
“I would tell them to take time out for yourself. Go away for a little while. Don't speak to anyone. Collect your thoughts about what just happened in your life,” he said.
“Once you've gathered where you think you are, go with that thought. Then start to experience people again with your newfound presence.”
It was with that process, Payne said, that resulted in his decision to take the plunge and return to the music scene as a solo artist.
The risk has paid off, with Payne's first three singles, the hip-hop inspired Strip That Down, the electro-pop Bedroom Floor and the sultry synth-pop For You (featuring fellow UK pop star Rita Ora), all being well-received setting the ground work for his first string of solo concerts.
Judging by the reception he received in Global Village, Payne's transition to solo pop star is well under way. According to his social media accounts, more than 80,000 people attended his free performance as Payne performed solo tracks in addition to covers of the likes of Pink (What About Us) and his song writing collaborators Ed Sheeran (Shape of You) and Charlie Puth's Attention.
Of course, it was the One Direction-songs eliciting the biggest response, with the young crowd singing along to favourites Little Things, History and Drag Me Down.
Not long after the show, Payne took to social media to acknowledge the Dubai concert as a career milestone. Posting a video of a drone flying away from the stage to reveal the size of the crowd, he said: “I just played to biggest crowd of my life. 85,000. Thanks for making me believe.”

Going grey? A stylist's advice
If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”
Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
